THE WILD-MAN'S WILD FRIENDS VIDEO SERIES - EPISODE 40 - LUNA MOTH

in wild-man •  7 years ago

Fantastic! A moth that is not only HUGE, it is my favorite color too!

The Luna Moth (Actias luna) is one of the largest moths in North America! Though they only live for about a week as an adult, they are majestic and amazing creatures.

My memories of these incredible moths range from finding them fluttering around under light poles at campgrounds in central Wisconsin at night to seeing them now with my own children here in Arkansas. It is amazing to see them marvel in the same way that I once did as a child.

In this video I share a bit about the life cycles of the Luna Moth, their diet as caterpillars, and other interesting facts. Thankfully, this female was very cooperative. Enjoy the video!

The information is the video is original but I did have a quick refresher from this source.

Love the green color, kind of looks like it's a glow in the dark moth. I'm wondering, the eyes-looking wings, is their function to scare of predators? Like pretending to be a bigger animal? Now I think of it, a lot of butterflies have the same eye-looking wings.

Maybe in 20 years you'll find one of her family members! If I take the average of 2 generations per year, it'll be 40 generations further. That would be like your greatgreatgreat... grandmother from 1000 years ago (if you take 25 years to be the average human propagation age). I like it! Have a good day.

Edit: I just remember going to the Full Moon party in Thailand. People paint themselves with fluorescent paint, which is supposed to glow in the light of the moon. Does the color it has have anything to do with it being name 'Luna moth'?

Wow, I did not expect @themoth to reply to my post. Thanks!

Didn't even think about that!

LOL! I see that you are still at a 25 reputation. I appreciate real comments like the one that you made above, so I'll give you a 100% upvote to try to give you a few bucks and a reputation bump!

Yes, recently found the Steemit community and have been looking around for the past week. There are a lot of members here with great posts about all kinds of stuff, a great way to learn some things! And the big social media platforms nowadays just have a lot of negativism, I like the positivity in this community.

Cheers!

I am very pleased to hear that you find out community to be positive with many great posts being made. Thanks again for making real comments. I appreciate them!

Thanks @themoth!

thx for sharing

Hi @papa-pepper, I'm glad you have found your 40th true that will never turn back to you someday. Cheers for that wild-man!

That's moth?! It's so beautiful and so butterfly like in appearance. Thanks for sharing. Usually your animal shares scary me, but this one I love! Can you do more like it?

They look amazing! Like a fairy or some sort hehe

That one real cool looking moth with its spots...i like..

I share your posts. Because I am posting you @papa-papper.

@bukharisulaiman

Wow Looks so surreal :)

I know. Crazy beautiful.

He is the largest moth I have ever seen! I have only ever seen two and I felt like I had discovered the loch ness monster. :)

I love its tail and the fact that it is behaving so well for you. Thanks for the video.

very cool

Upped and Steemed

I remember seeing moths like that and always thought the eye pattern on their wings looked like gem stones.

@papa-papper this moth: Luna Moth is indeed a beauty and shows the beauty of mother nature, upped. I have not seen a moth like this before and the color looks great.

The way that so many of these creatures have been created amazes me. It is beautiful enough to boggle the mind, but then you can add in metamorphosis and the whole flying thing, I stand in awe.

Awesome indeed, mother nature is amazing..isnt it? thanks for sharing

Don't believe in mother nature, but I do know what you mean.

Good point, wish you a blessed weekend.

Great video, what an amazing looking creature. SO cool! I live in Southeast Asia and we get some incredible ones here.

I bet you do!

Hermoso el color de esa mariposa, gracias por compartir hasta la próxima...! Saludos.

So there are other moth people, and look people like moth content. I've featured several moths without much love. Check em out, I don't know much about them but I see them all the time at my job and I share them here.

Maybe next time Ill do a video. I'm at work and extracurriculars are frowned upon as you might imagine.

Loved your moth, and I learned a bit from your video.

Thanks

Yeah, I saw your Cecropia a few days back. I remember that. Incredible creatures.

@papa-pepper this wonderful to refil some of the nature beauty. @tybello

I've always wanted to see one of those in person. Some day...

Hopefully.

They are beautiful. To bad lasts only a week. Are they all the same size, about 4 to five inch wing spam. Thanks for posting , something you rarely see.

I have spent a good portion of my life dealing with an irrational fear of moths so initially upon seeing your post, I had to stifle a scream. ;) I have purposely been trying to learn more about things that freak me out so I can rise above my phobias. Thank you for posting this...I can appreciate this moth's beauty and seemingly pleasant demeanor. :D Upvoted & resteemed.

P.S. We just don't have insects like this in California, at least where I live. I guess I need to get out more.

Beautiful moth and your picture of it as well. So nice that the children are learning to appreciate even nature's smallest critters.

Yeah, my children are learning some of everything!

Looks like I lost your address for the t-shirt shipment. I'm trying to get caught up on them now.

Could you please send me a new email with your shipping address?

Looks like a butterfly moth..unique color.

Beautiful!! You don't find those in Wisconsin!!

Beautiful creature! And, well, big. Are they rare?

Not exactly rare, but they can be hard to find.

I absolutely love these and make a point of not cutting my wild flower portion of my yard till well after they have came thru my area! Awesome your kids are enjoying them as well... Sharing for others to enjoy as well.

OMG!!!! I just saw one yesterday outside one of my gardens. I was tempted to take a picture but I just looked at it for awhile because they are gorgeous to look at. If I see her again, I will definitely have to take a pic.

Lovely moth papa-pepper, hope you'll put more wild things on your posts. I have a little blue moth, found by chance in my garden a couple of years ago. It was very pretty and I have no idea where I'll see it again as I no longer have a garden I'll post it. Enjoyed seeing your moth. Thanks JV

That is gorgeous! It looks like a watercolor painting! You just inspired my next art journaling entry 🤗

That butterfly look like leaf. It's beautiful.and thanks to @thelivingpoet

Hi papa,

Interesting story. I've been following you the last few weeks and let me tell you what... You're stories are unique and interesting! You posted an article before about growing your own food and poultry. To me, that's just wow. I value organic eating coz I always watch my diet crazily. About the moth, it's funny that a steemit username's "themoth" replied to your post. He can proly relate to your video. :-D

Thank you very much for the encouragement. I thought it was strange that @themoth got an account and commented too, but I guess is is a different moth, and not @themoth from the video. LOL

haha! different indeed. But it's still funny. I bet you didn't expect that comment either. You have a great weekend papa! :-)

It is huge! We also have a luna moth in South Africa. One evening I saw one flying around at dusk. Being a bit crazy anyway, it looked like a fairy. I chose to believe that it was. Look at your moth/fairy's shapely legs!

Whether this moth is a kind of butterfly, in our forest rarely found this type of insect. Valuable information for me. Thanks by @ atafauzan79

Thanks, @thelivingpoet for encouraging @papa-pepper to do this video. This is really an extraordinarily beautiful moth. It is a shame it lives for only a short time. I guess it's God's way of making us appreciate it more when we do find one...

My brother ( @bmjman2410 ) and I found one of these guys hanging out in the lean too we were staying in one if the last times we went hiking. Thought you might enjoy the pictures.

Very nice photos, I especially like the one of the face.

Wow its huge! Isnt this the obe fighting godzilla back in the 90s?

Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure that this is Mothra's grandchild.

for sure! xD

Oh my land, that is the biggest moth I've ever seen and I didn't even see it in person, but its still very cool. :D

I love green too and that is quite a lovely shade of green. :D It looks like its on a twig but its actually the top edge of their wings right? I'll have to start keeping an eye out for those...it'd be so cool to see one in person. :D

Thanks for introducing me to another new critter/creature I'd never seen/heard of before today. :D Have an awesome day! :D

pp, I'm 77 and the only time I ever saw one of these beautiful creatures was three years ago, I was so intrigued by its beauty I photographed it and then went on line to find out what it was. It reminded me of one of the Myan,Aztec, golden artifacts that people say look like modern aeroplanes. The colour of the small markings totally amazed me. Great post as usual!...............billytwohearts

Right, first things first!

Swallow tail thats what the tail is called LOL pretty obvious but i had t a total brain fade till I got back to watch the video no I am back home on my computer tonight

I love the subtle and yet still beautiful colors on this it may be a moth but it challenges some butterflies for its beauty

Congratulations @papa-pepper!
