THE WILD-MAN'S WILD FRIENDS VIDEO SERIES - EPISODE 5 - BLACK RAT SNAKE

in wild-man •  7 years ago  (edited)

This is the official longest snake in North America!

@Papa-pepper is very happy that the Black Snake Snake (Pantherophis obsoletus) is so common here in Arkansas. The ones that we had up in Wisconsin were considered to be a threatened species, which means that there were a lot less of them and you were not allowed to possess them.

These snakes are very good climbers that can reach over eight feet in length. Because of their climbing abilities, both birds and their eggs are included in the diet of the Black Rat Snake, as well as smaller mammals and reptiles.

When confronted, these snakes are known to defend themselves by biting, but they are non-venomous and mostly harmless to humans. On the homestead they can eat poultry eggs and smaller animals like chicks, ducklings, quail, and rabbits, so they can become a nuisance. However, they do keep the rodent population in check.

The information is the video is original but I did have a quick refresher from this source.

Digging the video, snakes are pretty unique reptiles, very knowledgeable , continue to live life thru ur passion doing what you love. Wish u all the best on your journey. It's a beautiful struggle® #mothernature #reptiles #thebeautifulstruggle #knowledge

Well Dang! @xtrodinarypilot63 - I had to kill a copperhead just last week for a Neighbor.

Did you eat it?

Haha, Nope! It was only about 18inches long, and there wasn't much left of it after I finished killing it for her.

Sure it wasn't a rat snake? lol

Dangit! Now that i'm thinking of it, it was actually a cotton mouth!!!

People often confuse them for copperheads at first glance.

There can be a lot of confusion with snakes.

Awesome man! You might be the next Steve Irwin

That would be cool.

Nooooo! I don't want @papa-pepper to die from one of his Wild Friends.

I remember the crocodile hunter who died for a stingray

Enjoyed as always! Just walked up on one of these out by my compost pile the other day! Startled me but realized what it was then just watched as it did it's thing. She was about 4 feet, maybe a tad less but very kool to watch non the less. Gave a 10 min break from the chores to chill with nature a bit. Good times. See ya' Papa.

thats awsome

We let all these snakes live. No point in killing them when they help to keep the mice down. I like to think of them as homestead employees. The rattlers on the other hand are like the employees who come to work drunk and start throwing things at the customers...they have to go!

@papa-pepper, please do a video on the pygmy rattler!!

I will. Thanks man!

That's fearless and cool @papa-pepper !
Does that Black Snake Moan? 🤔
🙂

I have pleasure to meet black rattlesnake. But I never get idea to handle him like you! :-) Stay sharp papa!

So, what's the trick for getting so close to those bad boys? You have a magic flute, or is it just sheer fearlessness?

Cool post man, but i still cant share you love for snakes :P
my first and last experience with those animals is that I stepped on one while walking to the beach. Was in Australia few 100km below Sydney. caused me to smoke a few extra the next minutes after it happened.

Stepping on the unexpectedly can be no fun.

We get rat snakes routinely on our land, and they are big! We almost always found them in the chicken coop, going after the eggs. Naughty stinkers. We just relocate them to another part of the acreage.

Cool post...

you awesome!!:)

Thank you @eduardo88.

Nice post. You should come play with our snakes here in South-Africa. That might've sounded a little wrong

How cool! That snake looks amazed to see you at the beginning of the video. I got a chuckle out of it. We have garter snakes for a similar purpose up here in Michigan.

cool vid @papa-pepper and thanks for those occasional bits of trivia that like having a snake in one state is legal but not in another, that goes to show the complexity of the laws that bind us.
If you aren't careful @papa-pepper you just might wind up with your own TV reality show.

Oh, they look fiesty! I wouldnt even get close.

Savage! I like it ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

#Respect @papa-pepper, those creatures scare shit out of me. But how do you know a venomous snake from a garden variety?

I found you from another site. Not what I was expecting, but petty cool.

Nice article

Wowwww that's truly amazing!! Many of my fds hate reptiles but I just love them :) they might be dangerous but can also be some good and "challenging" fds! :)

really nice article @papa-pepper I subscribed to your youtube channel...very informative video. If not for this video maybe I will jump off the roof whenever I see this kind of snake, however, by telling us great information about this black rat snake I wouldn't become so nervous if ever I saw one it my backyard. Thanks, buddy! resteeming it

This and rattlers are only two of three snakes I ever see down here in Tennessee. Some like you say are pretty darn big. Great video.

wow it is always a pleasure to see your awesome wild friends ;) enjoy your day! :)

Rat snake, they call them Black snakes here in southern KY, one of the homesteaders best friends, they love to eat varmints! so far they have stayed away from my chickens. We have one that is about 6' long and 5" around out by our pond, keeps our frog population in check!

Very cool! I am glad that you appreciate them too!

this is cool mr @papa-pepper

Born in the wild or born to be wild it is the same ;)

CRIKEY!

Interesting information!

You are one brave man there, @papa-pepper
I know it's non-venomous but still.....WOW! Thanks for sharing!

Upvoted!

Yeah, it wound up biting me in the forhead, just ask @bluerthangreen.

Ouch!! That must have hurt a good bit. Sounds like @bluerthangreen must have witnessed the whole thing! Glad it wasn't poisonous!

Tis' true. That lil'sis fella wasn't a happy camper. He was ready to strike out and strike out he did. Thankfully papa-pepper had his sunglasses on. Could you imagine getting struck in the eye by a snake?

I'm sure he will always have a greater appreciation for sunglasses! My oh my....That wouldn't be fun at all. Glad everything turned out ok in the end.

The Wild man strikes again :-) how a bout a nice snake recipe there ? @papa-pepper

Scary snake🙀🙀🙀 upvote and follow you

Im scared of snakes..

Nice vid lol, yes they bite sometimes, lol, more scary than pain. I think the rat snake is one of 5 that people call chicken snakes, it's a little confusing. I hate it when people kill these snakes, they eat frogs and mice, like a king snake, that helps keep copperheads away, no food, they leave. Keep up the good work !

Thanks my friend. Tried to get that guy to call me, but I have not heard anything yet.

Thank You for trying !

Sorry in advance but it reminded me crocodile hunter who died for a stingray

Man you should do a collaboration video series with Bear Grylls :)

If he's interested, what did he say?

Well I will ask him, seems very shy ;)

Got some dangerous snakes here in Aus too! Try the Taipan's fangs out for size. They act like syringes and inject the venom into prey. Love the post @papa-pepper

Now that is a pretty big snake! Good to know that they're non-venomous - still no help for rodents however ;)

we got some rat snakes here in the city, they are cute.. unfortunately they stay too close to their burrows, and when ever i try to grab them, they they go in very fast.

The kids and I were keeping an eye out for bull snakes at the lake today. No luck.

Very nice post

I almost fainted within the first few seconds watching this because it had its mouth open for a while and I thought it was gnna snap at you lol This is awesome though hopefully one day we can meet up and you could help me get over my snake fear :)

Cool, you need to come to Australia & do a series on some of our locals.

Like the Carpet Python and some Monitor Lizards? I would gladly come!

I know you said that the snake is non venomous but i reckon it would still sting a bit if you got bit by one of those..... and he/she looks pretty mean and angry. You wouldn't catch me within 100 feet of one of those..... You're clearly a lot braver than me..... and I'm guessing your children are absolutely fearless when it comes to the crazy critters you find in your garden!!!! Unlike wimps like me!
