The Little Brown Skink, a skink that is little and brown!
I first found these in 2004 down in the woods near the Mississippi River in New Orleans. Here in Arkansas, we have an abundance as well.
The Little Brown Skink (Scincella lateralis) is a small lizard that can often be found across the South-Eastern United States if you are looking. Because they spend a lot of their time under leaf litter and logs in the forest searching for small bugs and insects to eat, they are not always seen even when they are present. Their tiny size and coloration also make them more difficult to locate.
Like many other lizards, the tail of the Little Brown Skink can detach when grabbed or threatened. They will lay tiny eggs, but most often only a few at a time. To learn more, check out the video below.

There are certainly snakes with the same texture as stinks like this. There are some pretty cool little guys, and we enjoyed them very much.

I live in KY and we have those brown skinks here too. My favorite are the blue-tail skinks. The almost glow they are so blue and they are everywhere. It's fun to see them sunning themselves.

Great pictures! I live in FL where 'house lizards' are abundant. We also have the geckos and the skinks. The first time I saw a skink I freaked out! The way they look and the way they move is snakelike and I DO NOT like snakes! One long muscle that can move like the wind and jump if need be. No thank you!
Now I don't mind the skinks so much and my grandkids love 'em. Anyway, great video and great post.

We also get a lot of snakes in the basement during cold weather! :D
But that's okay, because this area used to be a big field, and after they built the houses next door and behind this house, the mice infestations are awful every year.
Snakes in the basement eat the mice in the basement, and Cosmo and Nova utterly destroy the mice upstairs. I'm excited to see how well Comet does with hunting mice! (My husband rescued him as a kitten in February.) Apollo isn't exactly sure what to do with mice. And Tuxie? Our eighteen year old intact male? He runs from mice. They scare him.
Go figure...
It's no wonder the alpha cat in our house is a passive inbred ragdoll....
