Drying the Mullein Harvest - Wildcrafting Mullein for Lung Health

in wildcrafting •  6 years ago  (edited)

I drink mullein infusion regularly to help build my lungs' strength and health as well as nourish my body with minerals.

I want to share how I dry the mullein. Earlier this summer we harvested quite a bit of mullein. This batch of mullein is near the front of my brain because it is almost completely dry and nearly ready to process.

I harvest the whole stalk of mullein as it is flowering or beginning to flower and cut it at the base. Then I hang it upside down to dry. This is so much more convenient and time saving than harvesting individual leaves, plus I can chop up the stalk if I wish to include in my infusions.

This much mullein will last for quite a while in my larder :)

Really good article! I don't have lung problems, but I have friends who do have problems, so this is something I can tell them about.
I've heard that an infusion of the flowers can be good for earaches also.

Thank you @amberyooper :) I definitely recommend mullein infusions as a long term lung health strengthener, not for instant relief. Although smoking mullein can have instant relief with varying success as an expectorant and asthma relief. I have read an infused oil of the flowers is a popular remedy for earaches, especially for children. I have not tried it myself, but I have not had any significant earaches since I was a child.

I will have to research and see if it will grow in my area. Great post very informative.

Apparently it will grow as a biennial in zones 4-8. As an annual anywhere else. It grows as a weed here in just about all soil conditions including garden soil. It also loves disturbed soil.

Well then it will grow in my zone, I am zone 7. So many wonderful plants to grow and wild ones to harvest. We are so blessed with such abundance!

Yes it definitely will! I believe it is zone 7a or thereabouts here

Reminds me of the tobacco shed back in the day, they hung it upside down like that

How interesting! Thanks for sharing that tidbit :)

This is fascinating to me. As an asthmatic, mullein has always been on my radar, but I've never grown it or really looked into it - I must do.

Have you seen the launch of @naturalmedicine? I think a good post on mullein would be really valued there (I'd know, as I'm part of the team) and we'd love to share and celebrate something of that ilk.

it's a shame @medicinewheel isn't still posting - would love to recycle that post under the @naturalmedicine banner and get some extra rewards for them. As they're not, it would be really cool if you did a new mullein one!

Hi @riverflows. I am also asthmatic and hence why I am very interested in mullein. I wildcraft the plant, don't weed it out of the garden. But I will be cultivating it in the future as well as selling mullein seeds in the near future.

The mullein infusion drinking is along term investment for lung health. I do also smoke the first year mullein leaves for short term relief. It is not as effective as an inhaler but a decent expectorant and safer.

I am also looking into getting some osha root tincture for when I have the worst cases of asthma, it's supposed to be a good relief/antihistamine.

Thanks for the inspiration to make a more detailed post on mullein. I would love to do that at some point in the near future :) I will be back out to the mullein patches soon to harvest seed and that would be a good time. Thanks for turning me onto @medicinewheel also, I will post on other herbs from time to time and it's nice to know that you are providing this amazing curation feed! I'd like to support your efforts

Amazing. I think a detailed post on your personal approach to asthma and the herbs that help and and their benefits would be a great #naturalmedicine post and I would love to read it ! 💚

Wonderful suggestion! I'll keep that in mind for a future post :)
