Wildflower series: Cape Gooseberries

I hadn't realised that gooseberries actually have fairly attractive little flowers because they all hide under the leaves and like many yellow flowers, they are only open when there is direct sunlight. These actually grow as weeds here, although they are edible and the plant has many berries.

This plant came up on the pile of rubble that still remains in the aftermath of all the digging we had to do to sort out the drainage at my house. I got halfway through the pile before the rains came. Now I just have a heap of weeds and a mess of tomato plants in my backyard.

It is a very particular flower, it has very peculiar colors. I did not know that it was edible, even within nature, nature rewards us with food. all right.

Beautiful photo!

Thanks for posting this. I'm used to regular gooseberries, not Cape gooseberries but I recognized the plant and googled it. We call those ground cherries or another name is a stone cherry.

How do they taste?

Oh! We have these in the north of the country. They sell these berries in boxes! Quite expensive!
