Did you know: Gray squirrels use deception to protect their food caches. And they put on quite the show. When a squirrel knows it is being watched, it will pretend to bury a nut- fully digging a hole, mock-pushing a non-existent nut in, even covering it with soil and leaves- all while keeping the prized nut hidden in their mouth or armpit. It is so convincing that even when you are watching for it, it is hard to tell if it is faking it. This is a form of tactical deception, a skill once thought to be exclusive to primates. #graysquirrel #nuttyfacts
