Prepping for Reptile Keepers - Surviving Pet SHTF Related Moments

in wildlife •  7 years ago  (edited)

Prepping is a movement gaining a lot of momentum lately. With global political tensions on the increase many people are starting to prepare for disaster. In doing so, the people waiting for these so called “Shit Hits The Fan” moments will be ready to survive.

But what sort of disasters should a reptile keeper prepare for?

Heating

Heating is a big issue when it comes to keeping reptiles. If you have a power shortage temperatures might drop too low for your reptile and it may die from being too cold. So what can be done to prevent from this?

You could have a solar panels, wind turbine and generator ready to be used in the event of a power shortage. This way when the power goes out your generator will turn on giving you a continual supply of power.

These are expensive methods. For short term power outages you can simply use travel heat pads used for shipping reptiles. These will help provide extra heat to your tank and keep your pet alive in times of emergency.

You might also want to have a backup basking light bulb or heat mat in case the one you use suddenly stops working.

Not Being Able to Afford to Keep Your Pet

One event I think all reptile keepers should prepare for either losing their job or going through periods of low income. If your main source of income stops, will you be able to afford buying live food for your reptiles?

All those boxes of crickets you buy every month might seem reasonably price when you can afford to buy them. When your money is in short supply they are an additional burden and strain on your wallet.

The solution to this is simple. Start breeding your own live food for your pets. Not only will the live food you feed them be of higher quality than the live food you buy from the pet store but it will save you a lot of money on your live food bills. Breeding live food is not as difficult as you might think. It can easily be done from a few household items. Find out more about breeding live food for Reptiles.
