Wildlife - Beautiful Fieldfare | Photo-TechTalk: What is Bokeh, described hands on

in wildlife •  8 years ago

The Fieldfare is a singing bird with a huge repertoire of sounds and melodies. If this birds start, others have to pause. They are very good and sound quite exotic. If they start, you think there are several birds, but it is just one – the Fieldfare. Those birds look similar to the Merl(Merle), but with a different plumage. They are more colourful. If I hear such a bird, I take the time, to listen to him. It is a pleasure.

Technical Discourse

If you just want to see the picture, please ignore this technical discourse.
Now I want to give you some thoughts about what bokeh is. As you know, I’m taking pictures with non-pro-equipment. I need maximum sharpness in the frame center, which is Aperture f=8, for my lens. Now look at the right side of the picture. You will notice, that the background (especially the branches) is not soft. It looks a bit displaced. This is, because of the lens. All lenses do this blurring in a different way, depending on their design. If I had used f=6.3, I could have blurred the background a bit more, because of the wider opening of the lens (more light in more directions=more blur). But I would have lost resolution. So I have to make a decision. To make this picture look more like f=4, I had to use a program like Photoshop, and blur the background out on my own. (Which I obviously did not, to show you this effect). This effect is what we call bokeh. It is used to emphasize the main scene/person/animal/object in a scene. This effect is very powerful and makes your photos look professional. There are other aspects to the Aperture, which I skip for now. Use it. It makes fun!

My next photo will be available soon. I do not use any tricks, to get a picture and I try to make them look as close as possible to what my eyes have seen. If you like this picture, please vote and perhaps follow me. Thank you and have a nice day!

I really like this picture and I like your comments on aperture use for achieving different effects. Nice little bit of the thought process that goes on when you take these.

Thank you very much! I'm sure that you know all this stuff, but I hope to get some more people to play with the possibilities of their equipment. They buy a camera and have little ideas, what they could achieve with some little tricks. That's why I like to talk of the technical stuff behind.
