Police looking for teen with possible handgun in Wilton

WILTON, N.Y. – Police are looking for a teenager they say left a residence in Wilton after a domestic incident with a handgun.

WILTON - Deputies are searching for a 16-year-old boy who may be armed - and the hunt forced the lockout of three local schools and a community college.

The Saratoga Springs City School District said it plans to delay dismissal until the teen is found or police end their search.

The Saratoga County Sheriff's Office tweeted that the teen left his home after a domestic dispute. Over a dozen sheriff's deputies are searching the woods near Northern Pines Road and Route 9 in Wilton, according to the department's Twitter account.

The search sent at four schools and an administrative building into precautionary lockouts.

Maple Avenue Middle School, Dorothy Nolan Elementary School, Saratoga Springs High School as well as the district's administrative building were placed on a precautionary lockout, the sheriff's office said.

"All outdoor activities are suspended and our staff has ensured all doors to our facility are locked," the district website announced.

SUNY Adirondack's Wilton Center campus is also in a precautionary lockout. Classes at the satellite campus have been canceled for the rest of the day and evening. Doug Gruse, spokesman for SUNY Adirondack, said the campus was responding to a nearby incident and that it did not involve one of their students.

"We are waiting on more information from the Sheriff," Gruse said.

As of 2:50 p.m. Monday, Sheriff Michael Zurlo said deputies were still looking for the teen.

In an email to parents, Dorothy Nolan's principal Dana Bush said the sheriff's office advised the school to go into a precautionary lockout because of a situation in the community.

"The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority," the email read. "At the recommendation of law enforcement, the District will begin a delayed dismissal. Transportation will be delayed by approximately 30 minutes. High School and Middle School parents may now pickup their students. Elementary parents may pick-up their students at the regularly scheduled pick-up time. Elementary walkers will also be released at the regularly scheduled time."

One parent living on Daniels Road said nerves are frayed.

"Middle school parents are on edge right now because of the delayed dismissal," said Robin Ambrosino. "Almost 20 min late so far, but no middle school buses on Daniels Road yet. There are a lot of jangling nerves til the kids are home safely."

Another mom, who didn't want to be identified said parents are worried about their childrens' safety while in lock out at the school. She said parents are also concerned about the young man.

"I get the sense that they are also really concerned for this young man and his own personal safety," she said.
