Wimbledon put on red alert for orange protest

Wimbledon officials have put the tournament on red alert for an orange protest, following similar incidents at other major sporting events.

The All England Club has strengthened security and will use undercover "behavioural detection officers" in an attempt to prevent protesters from sprinkling orange powder on the courts.

Orange powder has become the trademark of environmental protesters, who use it to symbolize the danger of climate change.

In recent weeks, protesters have sprinkled orange powder on the pitches at the Lord's cricket ground and the English Premiership rugby final.

Wimbledon officials are concerned that protesters could target the tournament, which is due to start on Monday.

Sally Bolton, chief executive of the All England Club, said: "We've certainly uplifted security in areas such as the gates and around the course, with enhanced bag searches, and we are communicating with people to explain how that may take a little more time."

She added: "Some of it is about the type of intelligence that we're using and the tactics that we're using. A part of our security arrangements are a group of what are called behavioural detection officers -- we have them every year, but maybe they will be looking for slightly different things than they would in any other year."

The Met Police has also said that it is "aware of the potential for protests" at Wimbledon and that it will be "working closely with the All England Club to ensure the safety of everyone attending the tournament".

The orange protest is the latest in a series of environmental protests that have targeted major sporting events in recent months.

In April, protesters from the Just Stop Oil group glued themselves to the goalposts at the Everton vs Liverpool Premier League match.

And in May, protesters from Extinction Rebellion disrupted the British Grand Prix by running onto the track.

The Wimbledon organizers are hoping that the enhanced security measures will be enough to deter protesters from disrupting the tournament.

However, they are also aware that the orange protest is a symbolic gesture that is likely to attract attention.

As a result, they are prepared for the possibility of a protest and are confident that they will be able to deal with it effectively.
