🍷Mazzle Reviews (moderately priced) Wine - Geoff Merrill Cabernet Sauvingnon - 2011 🍷

Where's the Beer!?

Wine on a Monday? It's been a while since I've done a wine review. So after getting stuck into a few good reds over the weekend I thought I'd do a review of one of them.

Geoff Merrill Cabernet Sauvignon - Mclaren Vale / Coonawarra 2011

Geoff Merrill is a well known winery located in Mclaren Vale, South Australia. The winery was established in 1980 and has a long history of producing high quality wines.

This wine is one of the more accessible wines from their range, however Geoff Merrill has a fantastic habit of only releasing their well aged wines to market. Which means you'll tend to only drink wines that have been matured rather than the young wines that you commonly find from most wine makers.

This Cabernet Sauvignon is a great example of a wine that has had plenty of time to mature, and is from the vintage of 2011.

What's it like?

This Cabernet pours the deep purple you'd come to expect of a wine of this vintage. Light barely passes through it which is what I really want to see from a wine from the Vale. It has a highly fruity aroma of black currents and plum, which seems rare for a wine that has been ageing for this period of time. On the palate you'll detect plum and stone fruits which is followed by strong notes tannin. I was a little surprised by the strength of the tannins which is my only real complaint with this wine. The tannins aren't out of place, and belong in a Cabernet however they appear very suddenly and feel almost harsh on the palate.

But overall, this wine is very enjoyable, and for only $28 is a fantastic buy. I'll be on the hunt for a case of these in the very near future. It's very rare to find a wine from this vintage these days and even more rare to find a wine from this vintage at this price.

WoW awesome work Mazzle! Love your blogs.

Thanks mate.

Wine? I hear they're made from big purple hops. :-)) You do seem to know your wine. I have a very smattering of knowledge of wine. And cigars. Getting more about beer. They all take an acquiring of taste and experience. @irreverentdan and I want to start a business putting together lists for all the government houses that supply the only alcohol stock for a territory/state/country. You can do the wine! Cool dude. Just considering... :-))

You definitely need to develop a palate for wine before you start to really enjoy it.

What do you mean by government houses that supply alcohol to states/ countries? I don’t really understand.

I tend to like Zinfandels: not too dry, but flavorful...as far as I've gotten with wine.
State liquor stores...see my beersaturday https://steemit.com/beersaturday/@dennisauburn/happy-valley-beer
I don't know of other states that do this with their liquor, but even at a restaurant in Utah all you can get is cheap-ass low alcohol beer. (most craft breweries do not go to a lot of effort to make good beers at this level) From what Irreverentdan said, it seems Iceland also has this format. The selection of beer @ the liquor store in Utah was very limited and did not seem very enlightened. We both said we were thinking about the qualifications of the people who select the beer for those stores. So...we were thinking of setting up an international company to advise these state liquor stores.
Does that explain anything more clearly? I know, it seems very strange.
Cheers!

And...as something else to do. I've nominated you for a music challenge. It's a 7day in a row thing. As usual, completely voluntary. I've found this one fun, but honestly, I usually do not accept challenges. The rules are in my waybackmusic posts on my blog. If you like music, I think you'd enjoy this, but... there is also beer to drink. Cheers mate.

Haha I'll take a look. Sounds interesting. :)

I have close to zero knowledge about wine and always find myself in the store staring at the sea of options before me. I will have to look for some Australian options...don't know if I have noticed them before. Thanks for the info!

Australian wines are pretty common internationally. You should be able to find them. I’d recommend just trying a few to see what you enjoy.

Sound advice! I will get to it immediately!!! ;)

Hi @Mazzle ! And what is your opinion of wines produced in Europe or from South America? Have you tried them? How different are they from the wines from Australia?

My wife is from South America so I’ve definitely had a few wines from Argentina and Chile. They produce some great wines. I’ve had a few good Italian wines as well. Of course, I’ve had some French wines as well. I’ll always go back to the Austrlalin wines though, but I am very biaised.

Hmm if talk about South America I prefer more wines from Argentina and Brazil. And if talk about Europe it will be wines from Spain, Portugal, and Greece. Once tried quet good wine from Moravia - Сzech Republic, but it's slightly specific.

I’ve had some good wines from Spain as well. I haven’t had a good wine from Greece though. :)
