Penfolds - a big Aussie producer making big wines

This weekend, I decided to pop open another birthday present. This time, a wine from one of Australia's biggest and most well known producers - Penfolds.

I don't normally drink wines from large producers. I tend to prefer to focus on smaller producers who I find put more care and attention into their wines. Penfolds have this to say about themselves:

For more than a century, Penfolds been recognised globally for a pioneering spirit and commitment to quality. Today, our wines continue to delight and inspire all who enjoy great wine and the Penfolds experience. Source

And they have this to say about the Bin 2 Shiraz Mataro:

Bin 2 Shiraz Mataro is a classic Penfolds wine, steeped in nineteenth-century tradition. Typically it is a generous medium-bodied wine based on shiraz, but shot with the aromatics and muscular strength of mataro. It’s best to drink early, but like many of Penfolds reds can last the distance in the cellar. Source

Penfolds know how to make a good quality red wine. I have only ever experienced a couple of their wines that I didn't enjoy, but those were from their budget selection. And I suppose that's how it is with the big producers, they know how to make their wine at the required standard - for the cheap wines, expect nothing special. If you're willing to pay mid-price then you can expect a wine that meets all of the mid-price standards, and if you're willing to pay for their top of the range selection, then you'll certainly get something quite enjoyable.

The problem with big producers however, is that there are no surprises. You simply get what you pay for. And this is perfectly true for this wine.

Penfolds - Bin 2 - Shiraz Mataro

Bin 2 is a blend with Shiraz and a small quantity of mataro. As the wine is predominantly shiraz it is deep in colour, almost blood red. The mataro softens the wine and adds to the aroma of the wine. The wine has a strong aroma of dark fruits, such as blackberry and plum and the aroma transfers well to the palate.

There are clear flavours of plum, blackberry and tannins immediately on the palate, with a medium to long finish. The wine is medium to full bodied, so certainly packs a punch. This is a well structured wine, and as mentioned, brings no surprises. It isn't overly complex but is certainly a pleasant wine. However, if it wasn't free, this isn't a wine that I would normally go out of my way to drink.

The wine would be best paired with red meat and other heavy meals. Avoid drinking this wine with fish, spicy food and vegetation/ vegan dishes.

Summary

Overall, this is a well structured wine that is of good quality. You can rely on Penfolds to produce consistently decent wines based on the price that you are willing to pay. You won't find any surprises with this wine however will have a wine that is good, but not great. It is medium to full bodied and has well rounded aromas and flavours.

My only criticism is that, for the price of $30 - 35, you could more than likely find a wine from a smaller producer at a cheaper price that will be of higher quality.

Wonderful wine, I do recall them being made famous do to the aussie political system ;) #winegate

I forgot about that! The sneaky bottle of Penfolds Grange that changed hands :)

Hahaha yup ;)

We definitely meet in our tastes. I like to enjoy some nice wine bottles as well, not only the different craft beers.
Only this $30 price range bothers me a little bit. Here in Bulgaria you will enjoy the top quality series of many wineries. Wow! I have bought some superior wines for about $20-25 here!

Cheers and enjoy your Sunday!

The price of beer and wine in Australia bothers me quite a lot. Most alcoholic drinks are marked up in value by around 40% due to taxation. It's insane, and makes it very hard for a small business owner to start producing his/ her own brand of drink.

If I want a really good bottle of red, I have to spend around $60 - 80 or more. I have one bottle in my cellar that I bought for $120 a few years back. Overseas you could get that bottle for around $70.

It's actually more cost effective for an Australian producer to send their stuff overseas since they don't have to pay the insane tax on their produce here.

Wow! That’s a huge tax! I’m not sure if I want to visit Australia now. Hehe, just kidding, I want to visit as many places as I can.

Yep, and the 40% tax bill doesn't even include the mark up so that the producer can make a profit. It's insane.

I think it was partly to try to deter excessive drinking in the country but it's such an ingrained part of our culture that it didn't slow anyone down. It just made the cheap alcohol more popular and made it harder to produce high quality products.

Penfolds is indeed a quality winery. I've had many of their Shiraz. I do think their price point is correct. Excellent review (hey I thought I was the one who came up with Wine Sundays lol...guess I forgot to check the old Mazzle site first!)

They do make some decent stuff. :)

I remember someone mentioning that a Wine Sunday would be a great competition. So I’m just tagging Wine Sunday in the hope that it catches on. :P

that somebody was ME! lol...at least, I had that idea too. and yes it should catch on! #WineSunday is what you do to recover from #BeerSaturday!

Absolutely. :D

Start posting your wine reviews for #WineSunday as well. I already have a few willing people for a competition.

First one with that official hashtag posted today!! lets do it!

CHEERS THE BIG WINES

Indeed, I went from this to drinking an $18 bottle of something that would be considered slightly above trash wine. I think I prefer the Penfolds. :P

Both were free though, so you can't complain too loudly.

Ha ha ha

Sheesh... $30-50? I guess I am a cheapskate. lol

Well written review, my friend. And you are definitely upping your game on the photography aspect of these reviews, as well. Again: you are pushing me to be better!

I am in great anticipation of that Barossa Valley bottle I picked up, and look forward to drinking and reviewing it...

Thanks Jeff. Wines in the states will be cheaper than Australia. I like playing with the photography from time to time. The lighting in one of those photos is quite poor but it threw some nice shadows.

I've been keeping an eye out for your Barossa review. Very keen to see what you think of that drop.
