Organic wine is made from grapes grown within the principals of organic farming which the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements define as “a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people. It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects. Organic agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and a good quality of life for all involved."
Start your day in a hidden corner of the Stags Leap District at Quixote. Viennese painter, architect, ecologist and philosopher Friedensreich Hundertwasser promoted a simple environmental ethos when building this eclectic winery - "You are a guest of Nature. Behave." Quixote is known for exceptional Petite Syrah.
Continue north on The Trail until you reach Conn Creek Road. Make a left and look for the old red barn on the right. Originally built in 1884 as part of the Adamson Winery, the old wooden Ghost Winery was restored by a New York dairy farmer in 1994 and named it Frog's Leap for its previous life as Frog Farm. When people think of organic grapes in Napa Valley, Frog's Leap is one of the first wineries that comes to mind.
Keep heading west via Rutherford Road until you reach Highway 29, make a right and travel north a few miles to Whitehall Lane. Make a left and stay left as it runs into South Whitehall Lane. Tres Sabores sits at the remote end of the road up against the foot of the Mayacamas Range. This winery has the feel of a farm and the owner is proud to demonstrate all aspects of organic farming. Once here, you'll feel miles from the congestion of the valley. Relax with a glass of wine from naturally grown grapes at Tres Sabores.
Final stop, Storybook Mountain. Continue north on Highway 29 until it turns into 128 at Calistoga - the winery is on the left a few miles up the road. Storybook Mountain produces world class Zinfandel from 90 acres of organic fruit grown in red volcanic soils on a beautiful estate at the remote north end of Napa Valley. A great place to end another epic day in the wine country.
