"Oh the Weather Outside is Weather" - Making the BEST of Winter.

Ok, so some of the tall tales, legends, and myths are true about the great up north. When someone from down south asks me "Isn't it always cold and snowy up in Minnesota?", I just have to laugh. From my experience, we have the greatest summers in the country. I believe we appreciate the summer so much more than people in warmer climates because of what we have to endure during the winter months. It's a balmy 14 degrees Fahrenheit outside my door right now and the heat is cranked way up. But fear not, us hardy Minnesotans make the best of it!!

The annual 'Snowball Open' is just one example.

The 2018 Snowball Open is a wonderful evergreen course lined with 18 holes of golf, carved out of the frozen tundra on beautiful Long Lake. Each tee box is manned by local merchants to offer you some extra fun throughout your round of golf.

This year and last it has been hosted at Birch's on Long Lake. A restaurant and brew house overlooking the lake. Snowplows clear the fairways and augers are used to cut out the holes. Pine trees are 'planted', and each hole has a sponsor, usually with some sort of food or beverage to give out. Most people use golf clubs, but hockey sticks are a popular option as well. And no, actual golf balls are not used, that would be rather difficult to find them once they're in the snow...so we use tennis balls.

Did I mention that to stay warm we drink a lot of alcohol?!? No? OK, well we do.

Some of the crew and then we head in to Birch's to warm up and chat by the fire a bit.

My buddy Noah had the shot of the day, chipping in from about 20 yards out. Considering he is the least athletic out of the group we all surrounded him and blasted him with applause and cheers. What he lacks in athleticism he makes up for in drinking ability.

My mom and our family friend(s) from La Crosse, Wisconsin even make the trip up for the Snowball Open

Taking what you're given and making the most of it is something that us Minnesotans seem to do really well. Do you live in a similar climate? How do you cope with the winter blues???

Thanks dear.

I need to get out to the snowy regions one of these years. 32 years on this earth and I've never had once the chance to frolic in the snow. Southern California problems.. haha.

Wow dude, 32 years and not once frolicking about?! That's crazy to me. I wouldn't trade it for your So Cal perfect weather. The change of seasons is really something magical, regardless of the temp swings.

I get that a lot, I really need to commit to a trip sooner than later. Living without seasons definitely is a blessing and a curse.. After spending time in Northern California's 40 degree weather it really made me appreciate coming home to an 80 degree winter heat wave.

Man, that looks like a blast. I'm kind of wimpy when it comes to extreme temperatures, so I would likely spend most of the day next to that wood stove, but of course I would have to try my hand at knocking tennis balls into ice holes, lol.

You're not alone! Last year was the only year I finished the whole 18 holes. This year we did the back 9 and called it good. The high was 33 degrees this day so it wasn't really too bad to be honest. But a warm fire (indoors), good company along with a nice chair and some food and it added all up to the perfect scenario.

I remember reading some of your cold weather stories :) Luckily this day wasn't too bad.

The thing is where I live there are no outdoor social events in the winter. Since half of the winter days tend to be in the 40s or 50s, we don't get prepared with big fur-lined parkas and winter gear, so when it does actually drop below freezing, it is too cold for us to go outside for long. Instead, everybody stays home and stoically deals with their seasonal depression, or they go to the bar and get wasted to warm up.

I almost spit out my drink when I read this. Seriously lol'd. It's funny cause it's true.
