And just like that, straight after that post everything crashed and burned, all the cards got pulled for crypto and that card issuer in Gibraltar. ..
Remember all those Bitcoin-backed prepaid Visa cards — that suddenly stopped working one day in January 2018? The card issuer, WaveCrest, managed to behave so badly they just got fined £250,000 by Gibraltar. Ouch! — src: davidgerard.co.uk
Yeah, that, well that did not stop wirex from moving forward in the process and now they’ve got a much sweeter setup, it’s amazing how much work you can get done in a startup in a year — they have the fancy packaging with the card that opens out, the application on lock and just launched in the last few days the ability to use a whole spectrum of currencies.
More than anything I needed a card that I could send in some of the main crypto and have a card for converting into different balances, being able to pull out fiat from an atm and just as a bit of a lifeline depending on remote working jobs like freelanceforcoins which works really well (yes, we have done work there already and it’s a breeze)
We give you the power to use your money, your way, on one borderless payment platform. Buy, store, exchange and spend your digital or traditional currencies, anytime, anywhere.
What I really like about the card (and their is a fee per month) is that I can have a gbp, usd and euro card, ideal if I’m dipping in and out of those countries and handy to have a backup card for different regions especially if you are flying a lot — I never thought the wirex card would bring me back to this account but hey there ya go, the world is weird right? ;)
what else is cool about it?
Well it seems like they really fixed the issues that I was having with verification, they swapped that whole system out for onfido which works much better, it’s faster and they have their service locked down, I expect they will get bought out by some big cat eventually but it’s great that wirex went down this route, I was verified after using my passport, my driving license did not work, something to note.
Earn 0.5% back in BTC every time you use your Wirex Visa card in shops, restaurants, on transport and more. We don’t limit what you do with your rewards; your money, your rules.
Right now they have 18 traditional and crypto currency accounts, the usual suspects like bitcoin, ether, litecoin and it’s nice to see not only USD but Australian, Canadian and even Hong Kong Dollars in there as well, I really enjoy the minimal interface too, really sweet.
Wirex is PCI DSS Level 1-certified, giving your funds the highest level of protection possible — We’re the only Europe-headquartered company to hold a Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) e-money licence
That’s a big deal right there and it’s probably why it’s cool for them to finally move ahead with their own card and system, I’ll be doing some test BTC and LITECOIN loads from other accounts to see what it’s like ‘in the field’ so to speak and I’ll get back to you with an update on that.
good to be back!
Sorry that we had a bit of a cold start last year with this but I was excited for what I thought was the launch of a lot of services that would have startup style banks and crypto currency and then obviously we had the crash down from $20k to $3k and the fire kinda went out of crypto for a while.
I’ll be looking at my current cards and different ways people are doing business in the crypto sphere and I’ll be expanding on all things transfers and exchanges and giving my opinion on all things digital working in the cloud in the coming months!

I've had a Wirex card for a while after losing the Bitwala card when they shut it down. It has worked well, but I'm not using it all the time as I don't have spare crypto for now. They have a Steem account @communitymanager, but it's not very active.

You got my hopes up there for a second. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be any cards available in Canada still. Anyway, the cards will only be useful short term once cryptocurrency catches on. We don't even need the cards if merchants just start accepting cryptocurrencies. We all carry around these cellphones, I don't even know what the point is to have any cards anymore even for fiat.
