The prophet Amos, who was born near the city of Jerusalem, was called by God to the prophetic ministry and preached in the Kingdom of Israel approximately twenty years before its destruction before to the Assyrian empire.
During that time, Jeroboam II ruled in Israel, this king took advantage of the weakness of the neighboring kingdoms to expand his dominions, even reaching the city of Damascus. This time was a time of relative splendor for the Kingdom of Israel, and although Jeroboam II did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord, no one in that country suspected or intuited what would happen with the Assyrian empire.
And faced with this situation, the prophet Amos was inspired by God to write his book, probably in the sanctuary of Bethel, where he remained until he was expelled from the country by the priest Amaziah, accused of conspiring against the King.
With a style similar to that of many prophets who left their writings like him, he warned of the sins of Israel, and that the Lord does not agree with misfortune, that is, the path of error: "O you who turn justice to wormwood and cast down righteousness to the earth!" Amos 5:7.
In addition to this, the prophet left some teachings of wisdom in the style of many of the sapiential books. Amos remembered Psalm 1, the Psalm of Two Ways, composed by King David, and taught that only one path leads to the true happiness: "Seek good, not evil, that you may live" Amos 5:14. But since those times were sinful times, he also gave some recommendations, which are still useful today: "Therefore the prudent keep quiet in such times, for the times are evil" Amos 5:13.
Like all prophets, Amos is a reminder that only the wisdom of God blesses men and that without the spiritual gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity) in the hearts of kings no kingdom is secure and durable.
