Ever since starting my blockchain life, I've been wishing for a great way to conveniently delegate portions of my crypto-funds to people that seem to know what they're doing. All without any possibilities of accounts running away with my funds. Personally, I believe there are no real experts in trading and investing, at least not all the time. People are imperfect, but they can be close to perfect at the right time and at the right circumstances. World events are incredibly complex, and capital effectiveness pretty much depends on our personal requirements that span from short to long term returns.
If you were investing in eco-green stuff more than 20 years ago, chances are most of your investments didn't see the light of day. It just wasn't the right time, although there was a very slim chance that you happen to bet on the right horse that survived through the decades and is thriving today. Suffice to say there's plenty of luck involved in all of these. However, communities and socially-infused investments made possible by technology these days could really change the game for the better. Sure it has the weakness of over-hyping stuff with little to no substance, but on the flipside, it adds a level of accountability and also, exposure to projects that might deserve it.
Plus, asset management is an important activity that most mainstream users don't get involved in. Also, consider that disclosure effectiveness isn't a thing that is easily solvable with so much noise and so many choices in the market. One elegant way to solve this problem is to diversify trust of asset management in a reputation and stake-based environment. If you take a look at where the world is progressing, take note that Telco-Banks are really going to be a big part of the future. STEEM / Steemit might be a unique manifestation of this future business.
So here's an idea for an app, smart-contract, or whatever you call it.
App Mechanism
Not an expert in these kind of things, but a brief outline on my thoughts about some of the processes:-
Send X amount of STEEM to an account with a formalised memo to establish fund management rules and constraints. Such an action effectively delegates another account as manager of said funds. Obviously, some smart-contract should somehow protect the investor from any possible fraudulent acts and conflict of interest coming from the fund manager. On the bigger scope of things, we should also be able to delegate entire communities that collectively manage funds, or sub-delegates to individual community members for such activities.
With so many different blockchain technologies when it comes to exchanges, I'm not entirely sure how this can be done for a wide spectrum of digital assets, blockchain-based or not. The smart-contract involved obviously needs to be compatible, or have effective interfaces / connections with exchanges. Maybe the solution is much simpler than what I'm trying to express here, and I'm certainly in the fog on this matter. But I hope you get the gist of it.
Maybe what's better is a smart-contract that mirrors account trading / investing activities without actually giving them the fund. "Fund managers" in this way get to earn from sharing data on related activities.
Benefits for the STEEM community
Diversification of funds with the option for re-investment in STEEM. Everybody wins. Also, Steemit can align part of itself as a social hub for digital assets management. It'll be great if accounts can delegate certain percentages of their funds and earnings to make their STEEM work for them. Maybe even by default at 10% to the most popular / profitable account (or even community).
Why use STEEM as the platform?
Well I'm not entirely sure about this, but I'll state some of the obvious:-
- Zero transaction fees, 3-seconds blocktime.
- Seamless, frictionless, and delegations can be executed frequently. I think consumer flow is a big part of the future.
- Steemit as a social hub may be effective and complementary to fund management activities.
- With BTS as a natural ally, could the DEX (Decentralised Exchange) be an elegant solution for the app / smart-contract's effectiveness?
- You fill in the blanks..
Possible projects to learn from
From my limited experience, here are some projects that we may be able to learn from (or better, work together):-
- https://iconomi.net/
- Extra: http://www.santiment.net/ (something about monetising the transparency of user sentiments on the STEEM blockchain here, despite the possibility of false / manipulated signals)
An interesting idea... I'll be curious how you take it to fruition.
For perspective, related competitor services are ICONOMI (an ETF maker), Melonport (for hedge fund management), Taas (Creating their investing terminal), and Aragon (Decentralized companies and jurisdictions).
Santiment is different, it's more like a bloomberg + info market for crypto. I would know, I'm on the team. It's synergistic, not competitive, with actual fund management.
I think you hit on a really interesting idea with the community function. That's something that hasn't really be done before; The closest thing to it would be Numeraire, but what you're describing with communities and delegating funds is superior by an order of magntitude.
Hypothetically you could have pseudo-DAO community funds, where people list their case and the investments they think the fund could create. A crowdsourced index fund or VC, if you will. Would I join one of those? Sure, I'd join a whole bunch of those and hedge my bets on different strategies.
As a platform, you could take a % of all fund transactions, say 0.2% for monetization. That would add up fast.
Anyways, like I said, I'll be curious how you take this to fruition. It seems like a very appropriate use of Steem as infrastructure. Also, I followed you. :)

I've no idea lol. Been generating plenty of ideas but I find it difficult to even start developing any working prototype myself. I find my limited experience developing close to a decade ago too dated for today's simple, effective MVPs. Tech stacks and best practices - I guess I'm putting this out there in hopes for real proper devs to consider this friction-less method of trading and investing through social communities.
Effective marketing is largely emotional in nature and trust is now beginning to shift to p2p networks. Recently listening in on the SEC's Disclosure Effectiveness Summit, they were talking about a lack of innovation in improving disclosure for retail-banking consumers. Also not an expert in financial services (regulated or not), so I'm not sure what the STEEM social framework may even innovate in this space. But I'm digressing here..
Are they necessarily competitors if they're also digital assets and platforms that may be part of SEED? I may be stretching it but this is how confused I am with this "new economy".
Not sure if I understand numer.ai. Is it right to say they're using cryptography to secure the (private) data of the hedge fund, while enabling anyone to develop machine learning algorithms to improve it?
There are a few ways that I could think of, but yes, the spirit of it is through social deliberation.
I'm rather inexperienced in assembling tech projects.. but it's something that I'm trying to learn about.

Hi @kevinwong
Maybe it'd be better focus down on what's achievable. Rather than build something big, just build it in parts.
The key feature seems to be the community coordination and decision-making one. The other parts flow from that. Let's model these components out:
Both parts are a little tricky. But one is achievable now, the other (smart contracts) has some barriers, partly due to the difficulties of handling exchanges accounts and non-standardized tokens.
If you're serious about doing this, I'd recommend building the crowdsourcing collaboration tools first. You'll need a way of gathering and organizing the crowds responses, and a means of voting. It's fine if it's centralized, and can decentralize later.
Additionally we'll need such a tool in the Steem community for crowdsourcing generally, so it'll perform a duel function, since the process for deciding which assets to invest in will be the same as organizing a community around any set of actions.
That's where I'd start, and I'm certain there are people in the community who would help you make that happen. Then you could build on that experience for the next application of the technology, be that the fund aspect or something else.

Good thinking. I guess the smart contract & transparency mechanism can be based solely on reputation and trust of community members first.
As for community coordination mechanism, Steempoll is already being made by @good-karma, but I think it could certainly be improved around the notion of community coordination / decision-making, and especially making it seem like a core utility that'll benefit users.
Thanks! I'll draw up something for this and source community members that are interested to get this rolling.

Great thinking Kevin. I think that pooling these micro-seed-investments under an umbrella of delegated community members could have a huge impact. The zero transaction fee and 3 second block time should be reason enough to implement something like this...

You added more sense in that short sentence.. I think we could play around with this idea and come up with some service/product that seems natural to steem itself (check out zurvanic's response and mine in top comment).

Great idea I have been thinking about some. Think we still need some smart contract possibility. However with bitshares there are numerous functions to help us see the potential possibility. My VIRGROW token on bitshares is virtually growing into some diverse collection of major crypto and steem related (UIA) assets as I think how I may combine some of my ideas with one you have mentioned that I believe people may be interested in.

A fund in steem with a good return on investment would be one of the best marketing tool to promote steemit !

Haha.. an uncle of mine gave the same input about AIs. Yes i would machine learning will be part of it and fund in steem can definitely add a utility on the platform that most ppl will use..

Would you use such a service? I think social-asset-management and flowy-delegation will do wonders.. well at least with the volatility and potential of cryptos..

Would I use a service that would function like an investment fund which generates STEEM for me and supports other crypto ventures at the same time? Of course I would. It would need strong book keeping, and a high degree of transparency but yeah seems like a great product that nobody is currently even considering.

I would too. Yeah, it will definitely be a powerful and useful tool. We need technological basis for development as I wrote above, or some implementation at the Steemit level.

The convenient financing of new projects for Steemit can be very relevant. When transferring money, immediately receive a bonus or a percentage of the stake.
This can become possible, as I understand it, on the platform that @dan began to develop (integration of Steemit with new Dan's project and its smart contracts under Graphen base)

Graphene is ideally suited for this. the main problem is getting lots of decentralized assets on a single platform with lots of liquidity. the race is on with ethereum, iconomi, melon, TaaS, etc. here are some of the assets BitShares could offer right now:
Everyone wants to trade where there are the most crypto-assets with the most liquidity. a blockchain based fund makes sense in conjunction with enabling enough assets and liquidity on that blockchain to make it interesting. The time is definitely now.. not sure how to approach it.

I'm still not entirely sure if I really understand the core compontents to make a blockchain based fund work as highlighted. What do you think of Mitchell's (zurvanic) suggestions in the top comment? Not competent / confident enough here to figure it out well enough.. you know a lot of about all of these. I think i'll start a channel on steemit.chat and invite some devs over. Personally I'm more interested in figuring out the marketing & user experience side of things lol..

Very good blog. Same mindset here. We really need more insights in the (ICO) market and previous investment results (even though they don't deliver any guarantee for the future). This is quite an interesting website I found: https://www.coincheckup.com If you want to know more about the: team, product, communication transparency, advisors and investment statistics on every crypto then this is your go to platform.
