What I've Been Up To
As a backup witness, I was running HF19 release candidate 2 since June 6th to help ensure it runs smoothly for the top 20 witnesses. Everything ran great with no missed blocks.
I upgraded my witness node to a new dedicated server with 32G of RAM. My witness was active during the switch without missing a block by updating signing keys in real time (the process a top 20 witness should be familiar with).
I added a full seed node at
steem-seed.lukestokes.info:2001I created the @ubf account where http://www.understandingblockchainfreedom.com now redirects to and published a second video as part of my ongoing Understanding Blockchain Freedom project to help educate and inspire people about cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
I secured a logo for Understanding Blockchain Freedom created by @gomatthew and paid for in SBD.
- Though not specifically related to Steemit, I successfully launched my Peerplays Witness campaign and am now producing blocks in position 21. I'm including this here because all experience related to running graphene-based witness nodes helps me be a better witness for Steemit as well. If you have PPY, please consider giving me your Peerplays vote.
Thank you all for being so supportive! I've been really encouraged by my results so far. One thing I've noticed is the witness rankings sometimes change based on user power downs. As Steem Power is divested, witness vote strength is also adjusted. Something to keep in mind as you vote for witnesses and make power down and power up decisions.
Due in part to the success of my witness campaign, I believe I've convinced @corinnestokes to let me away from the family to attend Steam Fest 2 in Lisbon, Portugal! I'm really excited to meet so many of you in person there. I haven't purchased my flight or booked a hotel yet, but I plan to do so with Steem earnings. How cool is that?!?

I don't think I really have a "favorite song" but I've been really enjoying The Red by Chevelle. It really gets me going every time I hear it. I actually never knew what the song was about until watching the video just now. :)
I'm a fan of NVC which teaches violence is a tragic expression of an unmet need. I also want to spread more voluntaryism and the non-aggression principle in the world, so maybe that's why this song connects with me so much. Anger is real. Expressing it doesn't have to be violent or tragic.
Keep rocking being awesome on Steemit. Maybe when my sister @karaelizabeth is ready and able, she'll do paintings for Steemians like this also. :)

The change in hard fork 19 ("hard fork" basically means mandatory software upgrade for the blockchain system which Steemit runs on) may help out new comers because:
Their vote strength (compared to bots) will be more influential. Instead of being based on 40 votes a day, it's based on 10.
Rewards will no longer be quadradic but linear. That means as more people voted on a post in got more and more of the reward pool. The new system means the strength of the votes will apply directly to the reward for the post, not the strength * the strength like it is now. In theory, this should leave more of the reward pool for posts which aren't on the trending page.

The missed blocks number can be a little deceiving, as some have been witnesses for a long time during bugging code versions of Steemit and before there was a way to disable your witness node during maintenance like there is now. That said, I do take the responsibility very seriously, and I'm quite proud of not missing any blocks so far. :)

Thanks man! I just read your witness proposal, and I think it's a good one. At the same time, I've maxed out my 30 votes right now, and I do tend to vote for more technical witnesses as I think it's a very technically demanding job making decisions about code changes, hard forks, maintaining servers, etc. There are many ways to contribute to this community and being a witness is just one of them. Not to discourage you, because I think the learning process and everything else involved is hugely positive. Good luck!
