I never knew that @steemyoda had done witnessing, interesting.

I saw that xeldal unregistered and I unvoted him/her.

I voted for you @quochuy :D
Best regards now. ;)

Many have tried and many gave up because if you are not in the top 30 or so you might be running a witness node at a loss.

Thanks for the vote, appreciated.

Welp, that got me looking at my witness votes. After going through my witness votes and removing a couple inactives, I decided it would be prudent to vote for witnesses who are contributing, and you're one of 'em!

Thanks for keeping your votes up-to-date and your vote for me.

I just revisited and voted for 30 witnesses, you are one of them 👍

Thank you, I appreciate

Thanks for the timely reminder to update my witness votes. Removed 2 that have been idle for a while and added a couple of others.

That’s great! The more updated votes the more secure will our chain be.
Thank you

Always useful to see the list of inactive or dead witness servers and it's actually quite a shame to see so many still occupying top 100 spot, even top 300 really. Seems there's more inactive than active ones in the top 500?

Yea as time passes, more witnesses come in and come out. Once in, they will never disappear from the list. We have less than 150 witnesses I think, which is why the more you get down the list the more inactive ones are listed.

Yea it's a shame they can't just be removed from that list once they are inactive or not producing blocks after, say, 3 months as then it would be a better representation and "cleaner"...

All the more reason to make sure witness votes are up to date but a lot of inactive accounts still have a vote registered to an inactive witness so that is also a tricky one.

I guess it’s related to the fact that witness votes don’t expire either, so inactive witnesses are still receiving votes and hence should stay in the list.

There have been suggestions to expire witness votes or at least to witnesses that have been inactive for a long period of time (years).

Hmm, yes maybe a revamp on how the witness system operates would be a good thing in terms of voting mechanics.

Say your witness vote is active for 6 months then you need to renew the vote or it stops? Perhaps a notification can be created where the bell is at the top. I dunno, it could be a way to keep interest and engagement about what witnesses do

Can be dangerous. Instead of it stops, the notification is safer. Or even reduce your RC to limit activities until you vote for witnesses.

Yes something needs to be put in place to increase the awareness and use of witness votes. I like the RC idea and notifications, even if it's just a wallet memo or reminder comment on a post (without it getting spammy).

Amen brother, know what you mean about not existing if not on that top100 list 🤦‍♂️ Was good to see a flood of votes recently 😉

Many are already on it now it’s just how to get the big players to remove dead votes and help filter the list 😅

The flood of recent votes might be related to Justin Sun buying Steemit Inc. along with the purchase he also received all the SP from Steemit Inc and can, if he decides to, vote for his own top 21 witnesses. So it is now critical that we get as many steemians to cast their witness votes as possible to mitigate the risk.

There are indeed quite a few inactive witnesses in the top 100 !

Yea. Unfortunately some of them have votes from now inactive accounts too...

use a drum and shout at the top of the voice ... getting votes is a peculiar task :)

Thanks for the update, I had 3 witnesses disabled for a while so I unvoted them.

We need like these updates regularly and therefore you got my vote there, if it makes good difference with my small SP :)

Thank you!
Small votes are just as important it’s adding up and make the network more secure.

Cái này nghĩa là sao hả anh

Nếu em có vote cho nhân chứng thì những người trên list này là nhân chứng mà không còn hoạt động nữa, nên vote cho người khác

à à em hiểu rôi

i voted you one year ago. thank you so much.

Thank you

I will have to devote time to this. I haven't checked my witnesses for months.

Thank you for the work of this publication. It is simply spectacular.. 😈

Thank you

I like your proposal @quochuy, that's why I voted for you.
Good luck!

Thanks

Thanks for the reminder, I had one dead witness and I see you're up to around #50 now. I now have 4 empty witness slots and there's a reason why.

...'they need to bring something to the table for me to give them a vote'...

They say you should use all your witness votes, but I'm not for giving them away easily. I can see you have listed the things you have done but is that enough?

Commenting back to people is something. I can see you do this unlike some of them who are so far up their own arses they can't be bothered.

Maybe I can move you up a slot, maybe not. I'm not asking for something in return as that would hardly be ethical but why should I give you my vote?

Yes, you should absolutely use all or at least most of your witness votes (4 empty slots is not a big deal) for the simple reason that it makes the chain more secure. By default, vote for any witness you believe to be non-malicious.

The smaller the number of total votes in use, the easier it is for an attacker (for example, someone who hacks an exchange and steals their STEEM) to vote in their own witnesses and cause havoc.

Of course, using all your votes does not preclude changing your votes in favor of a witness who, as you say, brings something to the table.

The safety and security of the chain (which means your own investment) benefits from as many people as possible using all or at least most your witness votes. In that sense, any responsible witness brings something to the table.

Of course, using all your votes does not preclude changing your votes in favor of a witness who, as you say, brings something to the table.

The last point you make is most poignant to me, some of the top witnesses.., I know of them but what do they do besides stick around in the top twenty?

I have been to TWO Steemfests now and met several. Some of my choices are down to who they are and whether they were 'unapproachable gods' at SF3 and 4.

I see you are in the twenty. Other than knowing you have been here since day 1, command a lot of respect, I don't know what you contribute other than a lot of flags when HF21 started (which I'm grateful for as I am an abuse fighter).

You have no recent posts, and your bio says nothing.

This is not a dig at you, but unless I have been active since March 2016 (I regret missing the early years), then I have no reason to give my vote to @smooth.witness.

Others such as @gtg I have met, I spoke to at length and have dined with (at SF4), @blocktrades I had a decent conversation with on the final day at SF4. Are these reasons to give my vote?

Some of it is forging relationships and others I can see are doing great things, such as @steempeak, @curie, @roelandp and @good-karma.

It's not just you but quite a few in the top 30. We can't see what you are doing. Do you see my dilemma?

I do not disagree with your voting philosophy.

My only point was that it is better to vote for some witnesses who at least are trustworthy and competent to secure the chain even if the votes are still up for grabs by witnesses who do something more, than it is to leave the votes idle until you find such witnesses.

BTW, my witness account is pretty much only used for the witness itself, and I use this account for the social app. While I don't post all that often, I do engage regularly in comment threads (and as you noted, votes and especially downvotes).

You can always use all your votes and then change them later on as you discover more about the witnesses.

However, It’s a good thing that you do research and ask about why you should vote for a witness before casting a vote.

As for me, it’s up to you to decide, obviously, but I’m also a developer and I have been contributing to the community by fixing bugs, redesigning and adding features to the Condenser (the app that powers Steemit.com). You can see my previous blog posts.
