Ready for HF20 | Witness Server Updated

in witness-update •  6 years ago  (edited)

You might be aware that there is an upcoming change to the STEEM blockchain. In plain speak this upgrade also referred to as HF20 is going to help with scaling and mass adoption for all the dapps that are currently running on STEEM.

The subject has been widely covered and not so long ago I took a more extensive look at the upcoming changes: Simply Explained: HardFork 20

Now, I welcome any questions Steemians may have regarding the upcoming hardfork and would be more than happy to answer them on this post. One of my jobs as a Steem Witness is to bridge the gap between the technical conversations and the users of this blockchain. That is a job that I'm more than happy to partake of.

The rest of this post, however, will refer to more of the technical aspects of this coming HF, as I've been experimenting with the software in preparation for the critical update.

Technical Details on HF20

  • The newest Steem version: v0.20.0 (also known as HF20) was just released 2 days ago.

  • The hardfork is scheduled for the Tuesday, 25 September 2018 15:00 UTC, when a majority of witnesses (17/21) can decide whether or not Steem will be hardfork towards a new version.

Just to reiterate: If you're not sure what HF20 is or what new features and updates will await you in 2 weeks, you could check this post out: Simply Explained: HardFork 20 - I try to tackle most of the concers people have on there, and break down some of the technical jargon.

Witness Notes

Now, I've gone ahead and updated my primary witness server to v0.20.0.

So far, everything is running very smooth and blocks have been produced. My backup server will continue to run under v0.19.12 in case of problems with v0.20.0.

I would strongly encourage all witnesses to be very proactive regarding this change, as it will only benefit the blockchain if we can find any issues as soon as possible.

Additionally, I will report any updates or curious things I may find on my blog, as I'm working with this new version. And would welcome any input from my peers as well.

Thanks @ therealwolf for being available, and for helping me from time to time. 👍

Sure thing!

Thank you for this @therealwolf. I appreciate you doing your part to keep us informed!

Leaving the tech details to the Witnesses, I only have two questions:

  1. Your projection on any disruptions - best-case and worst-case scenarios?

  2. Will we notice any discernible performance improvements, in our day-to-day use of it?

Thank you sir for all you are doing to add value to our Steem blockchain! 👍

This will be my first hands-on hardfork, as a witness so I can't speak from experience. However, if witnesses test and check the code prior, then everything should run smoothly.

Ok, fair enough. First hardfork experience for me, as well. Guess we'll find out together what the answers are to my questions.

Thank you @therealwolf, for your prompt response! 👍

I'm not able to speak spanish, but gracias.

Hi Wolf. Excellent update on HF20. Wanted to run something by you... My main role and mission here on Steem is to edify Steem blockchain projects.

My question is... how can I best serve you and your efforts to bring SmartSteem, or any other of your projects, to further fruition. In other words, how can I best assist you to make people more aware of your services/projects?

Thanks,

-Ken 🙂

Thank you for this update. What will happen to all delegated SP to various bots or steem condensers... will those be affected by the hardfork?

Those will not be affected.

GREAT GREAT..

One of my jobs as a Steem Witness is to bridge the gap between the technical conversations and the users of this blockchain.

Wow, well said, Sir!

Thank you!

Thank you for your insights @therealwolf. I think this update brings enormous value to the Blockchain. A lot of people who I asked to blog on Steem, declined it because of the 'Lock' after 7 days. However, with this update, it will finally change and hopefully people will recognize what they miss, if they are not on the Chain.

Exactly!

the new avatar doesnt give you credibility. the last was better, this just looks like some random wolf alliance from a game or something. that's just my opinion...
HF20 will be awesome.

I love it and it was custom made. But everyone is entitled to his/her opinion ;)

lol i have another opinion, nhl team logos. that wolf looks mean ,when it is viewed from afar, and when it is srhunk for comment post, it looks like his teeth are angry, maybe its just me..it does looks cool when viewing it in big size though. the vectors art is cool.

but if you love it, then who am i to sway you on your decisions. have a lovely day. i mean evening , i mean night. i must search up your timezone, cheers!

No worries, it's normal that new things are weird in the beginning or maybe even for longer - who knows.

And creating things that look good small as big is quite difficult, even my previous image had that problem.

The primary goal for this logo was it to get away from a person and towards something which symbolizes values. Imagine the shield/crest of a knight - a blockchain knight, that stands for all the positive attributes I want to represent. (reliability, loyality, high work-ethic, etc.)

It doesn't matter whether I am african, asian, caucasian, man, woman, old, young. My actions matter - not my appearance.

And somehow I chose this name, therealwolf, a bit randomly - so why not stand behind it and use it as a positive thing, right? ;)

YES! oh now you are talking! Shield/crest is wonderful. great speech!
well i just think i forgot one thing back there. that, change is a good thing.its progress.
Have a good one. see you around steemin!
