Many creators put out quality material and can not even make $5.00 a post and he makes hundreds off of junk or shitposts. Many of the small blogs here cannot even buy upvotes because they do not have to SBD or Steem to do it with and when they try someone else buys a large upvote so their bought vote is crap. In my case, I do not even try it anymore because it is a waste.

Subscribers are absolutely useless. 1% of people who follow me actually upvote my post.

It is a promotional tool but if you do not have enough to hit high on the trending page it is useless most of the time.

I agree persistence is the key. As I have been trying over a year now, wondering when it will happen. I guess I am not putting out good content for people to read. I will just keep on trying and one day it might get better. That is my hope anyway! I have 1490 followers but most are in the same boat I am in, small and not getting any attention at all.

The fact the community feels Jerry Banfield is top witness material tells a lot about the current state of Steem. Do we have that many people who just don't give a fuck where we go and how we get there?

I think it's ignorance. Jerry is a beacon to a lot of new users because

He is at the top of trending and new users don't know it's garbage yet
He has a lot of dated content out there that people use to educate themselves on steem

New users make up a large number of the available votes out there. If those votes are powered by ignorance, the guy that is capitalizing the most off it is Jerry.

You have to play the long game here. Eventually, these people wise up or leave. If they leave, he gets to keep the vote. If they wise up, then guys like you get the vote. Hopefully, that change comes soon for votes to expire. That's really the only way to knock him off his throne.

Hey @themarkymark I was introduced to steemit by jerry and looked up to him as a better content creator to follow, but the few months I've used steemit I realized he was not doing the right things here and unfollowed him, thanks for clearinh his position to us and now I have lost all respect for him as a content creator.

I am not as deep into this topic and the person in question as I should be, but there are a couple things I want to say.

Flags are scary to new users.
I have been for about five weeks now and everytime I see certain individuals around here posting, I end up not wanting to be a part about that matter because of how flag-heavy they and their followers are. I am not going to say any names, but you probably know the ones.
I am not a fan of witch hunting.
I can see why this Jerry Banfield isn't everyones most favorite person at the moment, but witch hunting never really solved anything either. I also don't want new posters that come here to see that this is a place where witch hunting isn't only possible but also accepted and permitted.
Steemit in general needs to do a better job at teaching it's users on how to properly use it and understand the surroundings. In fact, I think that steemit still needs a lot of changes and additions if it wants to play in the very big leagues, but let us put this to the side for now.

I can understand your feelings on this topic. I am sure you will understand mine.

I couldn't have said things better myself. Flagging to remove wrong doing is one thing but flagging is abused and used for censorship, it's as plain as the nose on someone's face and it's wrong. It holds back the growth of Steemit and discourages participation on steemit.

Flagging is also a abuse tool when it comes to the witch hunting aspect. I don't care that Jerry wants to sell memberships to people for fifty bucks, it no more of a scam then a lot of other scams on here. Like neglecting to tell people when they sign up that essentially unless you buy in, invest in bots or delegate your chances of getting attention to any quality post is slim to none. What he said or done is no worse than half the stuff you see Bernie say or that guys he's always fighting with ripping off the place for hundreds of thousands of dollars, I mean really people these guys are on trending all the time and they haven't stopped many people from investing or joining. Actually Bernie and his antics make for a rather good joy ride down the comment section, it's rather comical, livens the place up a bit. It's all these "colorful characters" that can make things interesting. So Jerry the snake oil salesman takes advantage....what's new about that?, sounds about right for this place. I just think once you start down this slope there's no turning back. I also personally think he needs help not people turning their backs on him.

Dear themarkymark,

Firstly, I have to admit that I am in a hurry and did not read the whole article (please accept my apologies but I just cannot read your whole writing atm Edit: I read your whole post - statement at the end!).
Secondly, Idk a lot about you or @jerrybanfield; I simply "know" that you are big players in Steemit (powerful witnesses respectively whales [?] no one wants to mess with, I think).
Thirdly, flagging must not be removed! At least if it was we would need a similar (respectively better) option because bad content (scam, spam, flaming, plagiarism etc.) has to be kept under control (below the surface/'removed from Steemit'...).
I do not have a better solution currently for such issues - I am not a (great) developer (or powerful Steemian) anyway.

Well, to my mind generally everyone can post and share with the world whatever he wants to - although I really do not think that such topics should be shared publicly, that is why you have friends for, normally (of course there are exceptions, as always; maybe he does not have any friends and so he 'needs' to share it on the Internet, no offense, I just do not know). I really do not want to sound impolite or anything like it.
Btw. naturally posting porn is forbidden but talking about it is not a problem (depends!).
Excuse me, I am not an expert when it comes to Steemit but how can he "put his own post on trending", does not he need the community for that? Oh well, he could have lots of bots or just a lot of money too (what he presumably has if he is a whale).
So that he fell back from #19 to #31 does not seem legitimate, but I highly probable do not know every single "crime" he has committed.
In my view, you should always (try to) act rationally - objectively not subjectively. Moreover as a powerful person. Be fair and do not just hate on others (only) because you do not like them...
Idk, I do not follow Jerry; but if he really is doing all these things you claim then he definitely should change something (or probably should have even earlier). Keyword: awareness (when you are an important Steemian, moreover as a witness). Witnesses should be intelligent, polite and fair - not just rich people.
And they definitely should not be sharing "inappropriate/stupid... stuff".

Back when I first heard abouy Jerry my close friend told me Jerry was involved with a large company and had control over a large portion of the companys finances. Supposedly he used the money for his own purposes and caused that company quite the heartache. Im not sure about the finer details but it's food for thought.

Users see the big payouts and think that's going to give them big curation rewards, that's a big part of what makes his posts go up. I go over that in one of my older posts showing that voting on smaller unrewarded posts will yield far more curation rewards.

It is about time I heard something smart on here! I tell ya, this has been a very trying period. My patience is wearing thin with all this BS I have to put up with on this platform. I have no witness currently, and it will be quite a while before I even consider diving into that swap again. You are so correct in regards to that individual. Dude I'm not defending anything that Jerry does. but the guy has a point. did copyright protection software eliminated piracy? nope. we shouldn't take his proposal at face value, but it's right to have the discussion. if I for a moment think of withnesses as representatives, I wouldn't like to vote for a guy the practices bad politics. I.e. bad mouthing the other guy. I know some of you criticism is valid and not mean spirited. You obviously care about Steem. but it's okay to rethink downvoting, since it is proving uneffective in my view.

What gave that guy the right a couple weeks ago to not only take away information war rewards from my postings but also to flag the articles to take away the other few pennies on the account even AFTER it was proved through Steemcleaners I had the permission, blessing and gratitude from the author to post her stuff? It was pure vendetta driven from a dispute that he had no business being called into....no one corrects these wrongs and that's why flagging has got to go.

Well. I actually saw a stupid facebook post/video of jerry and that made me land here. I haven't got much influence here because steemit already has become very congested and i have been reporting it for a while now. The bots and pay-per-vote has kind of ruined the system but yeah, its the attitude of jerry and people like him at the top of the chain that has hit this most. I once saw his video asking for $270 i think for giving a breakthrough knowledge of something very useful and later i found out that it was the witness thing that he learnt from others and started asking for money for himself.

Once a vote is placed for a witness does it remain there forever unless removed by the user?

I ask this question as I'm sure many newcomers show up, post a few articles, vote for a witness, and leave to never return. If this is the case maybe a better solution is forcing everyone to revote for their witness of choice each 1 year anniversary of their account. If they do not participate their witness votes are removed until they do.

I was aware of that part. I was wondering about the potential countless accounts who have voted for a witness, but are no longer active on here. Do their votes continue to count forever?

If that is the case I think there would have to be a better process like something I mentioned above in order to encourage witnesses to continue to win over active users votes. Not allowing them to hold their position because they convinced a newcomer to vote for them 2 years ago right before hat new user gave up and left steemit forever.

Yes, they count forever and one of the issues plaguing witness voting. There are a lot of inactive witnesses that are still voted with a lot of stake and there are a lot of witnesses who gave up on Steem but still get a payday for their witness position.

I was annoyed that you blacklisted him because he seemed to be genuine about his suggestion to remove flagging. So shouldn't be an offense to recieve blacklisting.

When I first joined, I thought that Jerry wasn't so bad.. then I continued reading and reading and realized that he is a phony and a scam artist.

I'm glad that you posted this and I hope that enough people read this and take it to heart. That guy is bad for the platform. I wish you could vote in the negative AGAINST a witness. There are a few witnesses who I would like to "down-vote" their witness power. I don't care if the down-vote takes up one of my 30 total votes .. Also, knowing the number of accounts that voted FOR vs Against a single witness while you're voting on the witness page would be helpful .... that would be a much more useful addition to the Steemit Ecosystem than removing flagging... ugh..

Why the new users in steemit doesn't get any votes. Lots of new users are losing hope in Steemit. Is that their reputation score is low ?

Reputation has little to do with anything on Steemit. It is a broken system that is so easily gamed it has little point.

The reason is that curation rewards are so low that it is the attractive action on Steem due to the 10:1 or more difference between self-voting. Most people have people they vote for already and don't venture from that list very far.

Hold in there, there is hope communities will help in this regard. 50/50 curation rewards might also be a good solution that will encourage people with stake to vote on new users.

It isn't easy, and it certainly isn't fair.

His history is pretty sketchy before joining, he used to sell courses online and got kicked off the course selling site for being a scam. He also got run out of Dash community. When someone said "look into his past" I did. Its really scammy. I don't think Steemit needs a crook advertising for us in youtube

@themarkymark What I have to say about the flags and removing posts for false copyright claims is that these FLAGS are hurting people that are not guilty of the things you listed. Here is a link to a "copyright claim" to my blog that was my article. I wrote it/ My words!!!! I blogged it and because it is exposing the Sandy Hook School shooting lies and cover-ups that Lenny Pozner is Reubin Vabner it was picked apart all month by taking down pictures and then the entire blog. LOL, yes I am "one of those" that say Sandy Hook was faked. You know why? Because it was. Many top experts have proven in so many ways that Sandy Hook was fake. There is an entire book you can download about some of the initial research for free online. It is called "Nobody DIed at Sandy Hook" by Dr. James Fetzer and here is the link for that.
