Being in the top 20 does not guarantee they are good enough...

in witness •  5 years ago  (edited)

...according to my criteria, totally personal and subjective, of course, but still mine.

Finally, I managed to audit my witness list...

I recognise that I have spent quite a few time during these last three days analysing each of the witnesses which I voted on...
I used to make it faster in the past when the DUPLIBOT tool was still working... now it is a quite tedious work.

Anyway, the following is my list of voted witnesses, sorted according to the official rank of witnesses:

Witness Official RankWitness Name
1@roelandp
2@yabapmatt
4@gtg
5@good-karma
6@themarkymark
8@aggroed
12@therealwolf
16@curie
19@cervantes
20@drakos
22@steempress
23@lukestokes.mhth
24@emrebeyler
25@pharesim
26@actifit
28@steempeak
30@abit
35@busy.witness
36@arcange
39@blockbrothers
42@holger80
47@neoxian
51@coingecko
53@fyrst-witness
55@dragosroua
59@mahdiyari
67@steemitboard
68@quochuy
73@klye
81@cryptopassion

In order to evaluate the "performance" of my selected witnesses, I check the following aspects in every one of them:

  • How many days have past since this witness last wrote a block to the blockchain?
  • Did the witness write a Post within a week?
  • Did the witness write a comment within a week?
  • Did the witness vote a Post within a week?
  • Is the signing key of the witness active? (If it is not, it means that this witness cannot produce any block)
  • Is the witness in Powering Down mode?
  • Is the witness using his SP conveniently (according to my criteria, of course)?

Then, I compiled a table with all the gathered data:

And after, I evaluate and score each one of the analysed properties for every witness:

As a result, I get my own witness rank, MY RANK:

As a consequence, I can say that, 8 witnesses of my list have reached the top score:

@themarkymark
@therealwolf
@arcange
@neoxian
@coingecko
@steemitboard
@quochuy
@cryptopassion

From these 8 accounts only 2 are within the "Official" TOP20

On the contrary, according to my criteria, witnesses as @fyrst-witness ,@blockbrothers , @lukestokes.mhth and @busy.witness, all of them at the bottom of the list, do not reach the minimum score in order to me to consider keeping the vote on them.

These accounts get the worst score due to various reasons but mainly because their lack of use of their Voting Power in the Steem Community... Additionally, the continuous Power Down combined with null engagement provide me with enough data to take the decision of removing them. Neither of these 4 accounts are within the "OFFICIAL" TOP 20 but very close.

So now I have 4 free Witness slots!

Which witnesses do you recommend to vote and why?

*Reminder: if you feel like not having time to do a proper analysis and still think that mine is fair , you can also choose me as your proxy that will vote for witnesses for you.

Just, keep using your witness votes doing an important work.

i am impressed with the powering down column, very sad

i understand your reasoning but the best thing a witness can give us is a super fast serving API so that things run smooth, very important. As i start to do some dev on the chain now, i discover for example how superior the service from witness @anix is, there is a very serious cost in providing this and the only money coming in is steem so i understand also the need for powering down if the money isn't there

I agree with you, that’s why I analyzed what they do with their powering down. The cost of the server and the node justify the powering down normally but sometimes not. For instance, if one witness keeps powering down and keep being inactive with his voting power and his posting/commenting duties, it is not a good signal for me.

Nice work and for sure took long time to do! The result make me thinking it miss something, if you take the case of @busy.witness it's just an account created by the https://busy.org/ team to manage their witness server, they upvote through @busy.org and @busy.pay account, how do you handle that?

Agree with you but Still they can use their Voting Power with the witness account, at least. IMO, having the voting power always at the 100%, ie without use, it is still a waste of resources.

Not using their voting power is a good thing for the rest of us.
The more idle steem, the more influence for active steem.

I don’t think so. I prefer they use their voting power in order to upvote active members.

It is a zero sum game.
When a whale votes everybody else gets less.
Curation rewards are trending up, it may be because a certain bad whale stopped bullying us with his stake.

When a whale use his power discovering content this is good for anyone. Having the VP unused at 100% it’s a waste of resources, IMO.

Yes, good behavior helps.
If wasting those resources of a whale causes more people to play, that is also good.

We are getting better.

Wow .... you have done such a detailed job :)
Cast your vote properly. Will look at your data with attention.

Excellent, anyone should do it

What's neoxian and marlians? I've seen these tags very often but haven't managed to find out what's with them.

Similar to palnet, tribes for general content

Great effort. However, you should see how you can include even more important aspects of a witness activity such as the projects that contribute to and other community work they do.

I'm taking into account this aspect as well. I know what busy does, also yabapmatt, holger80 and others. I have evaluated that point as well. But I don't like one account with plenty of SP and VP not upvoting anyone.
I used to support blockbrothers for instance but they seem to only upvote circle jerked people, always the same.
Also lukestokes was very involved with all his accounts long time ago... Now seems that is more focused on other projects as EOS than steem.
Maybe I am wrong but those are the conclusions I get.
