Quick Woodturning While I Plan the Next Big Project

in wodworking •  7 years ago  (edited)

Now that the Pie Crust Tea Table is done, it is time to get to work on some bookshelves I promised to make.

I picked up this 8/4 stick of walnut at the nearby lumber yard to use to make the frame.

I could tell right away, under the rough sawn exterior, that something special was going on with this piece of wood.

So after making all the measurements for the bookshelf frame, I found I would have a little block of 7x7x2 leftover that I could make a little turning with. So I went ahead and cut that off first, just to goof off. Check out the ripples in the surface.

Since it was only 2” deep, to get the most out of it I glued a bit of scrap to hold it in the chuck that I could just waste later (thanks to @mrkstn1 for the tip.)

I formed the rough shape of the base,

Then flipped it around and put the waste piece in the jaws of the chuck and started working on the lip of the bowl.

I decides to experiment with a few different techniques. I gave the bowl a thin cove around the edge and a deep ovehanging lip, and a continuous smooth arc for the base.

I had to get a light right inside to hollow it.

Here you can see how the chuck holds the glued on tenon.

beautiful........ have you tried those carbide tools that have the replaceable cutters? And for that and the other mesquite one a curved rest and they make a chisel just for getting into those deep side walls..... I also saw a guy set his up like a metal spinning lathe to get inside and the leverage of the rest with the pin made it safer and easier... I'll see if I can find that video..... good stuff man

here ya go.... this guy has some great videos

No, no carbide tools yet. I am looking at a ring tool though. And I definitly need a better tool rest.

looks great 👍😊

Thanks:)

That is cool, I never really got into Lathe, I really should buy one and give it a try, what a beautiful piece. Thanks

Thank you, I find it really enjoyable. Since most of my furniture projects take several months start to finish it is great to do a quick bowl now and again to get the satisfaction of finishing something.
