Cost of being a mother

Motherhood is one full time job for which you get paid in kisses and hugs. Being called a 'mom' is the best feeling and a woman can risk anything for it and sometimes they have to risk their life to give birth to a young one.

Giving birth to a child is no easy. I remember how much I was tensed when I was told that I cannot give birth the normal way and would need to be operated upon. While my parents and husband were ok with the doctors decision, I have a whirlwind inside me because I had never been operated upon for anything before. However, I pretended to remain calm. I couldn't sleep since I was told about my c section and the feeling when I was wheeled into the operation theater is something I still get scared of.

But, I trusted my doctor and his team who made sure that I was at ease by discussing with me about movies and formula one race. I was administered the epidural and soon I was numb. Within minutes I could hear, something that sounded like a cat, cry. I soon asked the nurse who was standing beside me what it was and she said it was a boy. I was happy, there seemed to be no pain now, I kept telling myself, that was easy. But little did I know about the condition I would be in after the epidural effect faded. The next 3 days were very bad. I would beg the nurse to give me pain killers and my doctor would shout at me to bear the pain.

However, things soon got normal and I was back home. While I was browsing the internet today I happened to read about a woman from Florida who has the epidural needle struck to her back for 14 long years. It happened when she gave birth to her son 14 years back and was administered the epidural. But, somehow a 3 cm long tip of the needed got lodged in her spine very close to the nerve that connects her left leg. She often had this unbearable back pain right from the time she was discharged, but she often shrugged it off, a recent CT scan revealed the condition and she is scared that even of the needed moves a little she would be paralysed for life.

There are many more such cases that women go through during their delivery. The life after child birth seems like another life because you have neared a death like situation and are back to the world. But, being called a ' mom' makes it worth the risk.
