Okay, now that the Bear vs Man thing has been explained to me, let me explain how dumb it is to anybody who thinks that picking the bear is a good, reasonable choice.
Yes, more people are killed by men every year than bears. That's because we encounter far more men every year than we do bears.
How many times does the average person encounter a bear? I've been to Alaska twice. I lived in Montana for a year. I've been to Colorado several times. I've never had a bear encounter. If I did, I would probably want to have a .500 magnum on me. Most men can be taken out with a 9mm.
If you live in a city, you probably walk past a thousand men a day. Most days, none of those thousand men do anything threatening. If you're within twenty yards of a bear, it would be entirely reasonable for you to reach for your bear mace or your large caliber gun just in case. It wouldn't be reasonable for you to reach for your pepper spray or your gun just because a man brushes past you.
