Girl 1- Come babe, let's take a picture.
Girl 2- Oh please! I'll pass. You should though. You totally look good.
Girl 1- Why should I and you would not?
Girl 2- You are pretty na, and your dress is on point, your makeup sef is on fleek, compared to how I am.
Girl 1- Excuses, say something else please....
Girl 2- It's true na......
....and the conversation will go on and on like that!
Dear Esteemed Ladies,
The above scenario might seem simple, might seem normal, might even be the way some of us address ourselves (as in Girl 2), but can I announce to us that there is something totally wrong with the above conversation?
The journey to having low self-esteem starts one day. If you discover you suddenly can't stand for yourself, you suddenly have the urge to run and hide at every slight attention you are showered with (not referring to a naturally shy person here), and you discover you compare everything about you with another person, please watch out! That might be indicating your self-respect, self-worth, self-esteem, sense of self-pride (not as in arrogance) is going down drastically, which may be dangerous.
I have heard so many ladies complain too much about their physical appearance. They will go along the lines of "why am I this tall?", "na only me God create fat for?", " why am I as short as this?", "I could have been fair like Juliet Ibrahim, fit like KaffyDance, curvy like Mercy Johnson (or even Omotola Jolade), but here I am, dark like Baba Suwe", et.c.
The question is, what is so difficult about loving yourself totally, I mean you being deeply in love with YOU, just the way you are? Don't get me wrong o, for those fat, and working out, it is totally a great idea (nobody wants unattractive as friend(s) anyways), but it becomes a problem when you allow it define you, it becomes a big issue when you allow it limit you.
However it is you look, love yourself. With whatever it is you have, respect yourself, and whoever you wish to become, don't let your physical appearance limit you. It is bad enough that people out there voice their negative opinions about how we look just to put us down (intentionally or unintentionally), don't let us make it worse by judging ourselves too.
EVERY LADY IS BEAUTIFUL IN HER OWN WAY!
