The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications made of various materials, such as stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials. It was built along the northern borders of China to protect against invasions and raids by various nomadic groups. Construction started as early as the 7th century BC, but the most well-known sections were built during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644).
The wall stretches over approximately 13,000 miles (21,196 kilometers) and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is one of the most iconic symbols of China and a major tourist attraction.
