Laguna consists of four congressional districts, 23 municipalities, six cities, and 674 barangays. The famous mountains of the Sierra Madre, Banahaw, San Cristobal, Dalag, Malepunyo, Sunga, and Makiling protect the province from strong typhoons. The climate and the beauty of Laguna were a source of inspiration for many Spanish writers like Felix Huerta and Don Fernando Fulguso during their time.
The name Laguna came from the Spanish word "lago" meaning lake. The province is also famous because it is the birth place of our Philippine national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal. The town of Bay was the first provincial capital when Captain Juan de Salcedo together with almost one hundred Spanish-Mexican soldiers and Visayan allies conquerred the province in 1571. Catholicism was introduced to the province in 1578 by Franciscan missionaries lead by Father Juan de Placencia and Diego de Orepesa.
Laguna' s major product is coconut. The leaves and other partsof the coconut tree are used for making huts, banig (sleeping mats), hats, and walis tingting (stick broom).
The copra, the coconut 's dried white flesh, is crushed to produced oil. Aside from coconuts, Laguna's fertile land also produces extraordinarily sweet fruits like lukban, santol, lansones, and rambutan. Its native delicacies like buko pie, sinukmane, nilupak, puto, suman, puto seko, and espasol are favorites of many.
