Ares was the god of war, son of Zeus and Hera and a great olympian God
In Art Ares represents the angry and strong aspect of war which is in contract to Athena who represents military expertise and authority as the goddess of intelligence.
Although Ares has the physical zeal necessary for success in war, the Greeks were ambivalent toward him because he was a dangerous, overwhelming force that was destructive in battle.
He is well known to have an affair with Aphrodite, the wife of Hephaestus
Ares and Aphrodite exposes them to ridicule by the gods when Hephaestus trapped them both naked in a bed using a clever device he made.
Ares rarely figures into mythology stories, but when he does, he usually suffers some form of humiliation. Harmonia, goddess of harmony was the daughter of Ares and Aphrodite. In art, Ares is generally depicted wearing a spear and a helmet.
