The Beginning of The License Plate Guitar Pt. 3

in woodworking •  7 years ago

So I'm in the garage after glueing up a couple slides and I pick up the neck for the license plate guitar and start working on it. All of a sudden I realize, Hey This is a series for Steemit!!!!!! So if the gap between the last post and now is too big I apologize now.lol

So when I stopped I had just rough shaped the head stock after using a trimmer on the router to clean up the fretboard after glueing it....

Now I'm going to cheat and rough shape it with the router.

I use two different shapes on my necks. One like this one is rounder and thinner and more people prefer it. I start off with 45 degree router bit, camphor bit to some, and after I cut the angle I will finish it different ways.

Sometimes I will finish shaping with a drum sander on a dremel or in the drill press. Other more satisfying is a rasp. Either way you file off the sharp edges of the route and the neck becomes round.

From here on out it is just good old fashioned elbow grease with lots of sandpaper. I sanded this one down to 320 and after drilling the headstock for tuners it will be ready for lacquer.

By the way the second way of shaping is faster but not as nice. I shape it by using a 1/2 round bit on the edges then all that's left is some rough sanding then finish sanding and its done....

Here's the first dry fit. It is going together nicely. The body needs more sanding, I need to get some gas for the heater, and put a finish on it. Crank up the heat to just below sweltering, turn it off and spray...... In a little bit turn it back on low to keep the ice goblins out....
