Quartersawn Sycamore

These are called medullary rays. They carry nutrients and water from the heart to the bark. They are most visible when the wood is cut right through the center of the trunk.

We have a lot of Sycamore trees here but I don't seem to see anyone harvesting them. I will have to look into this. It's not the first time I have seen this gorgeous wood......

I have a couple slabs that the carpenter bees got into. One day I will put them to use.

Very interesting! I had a wood working teacher once describe wood as a tight bundle of straws which changed my perspective on it's "solidness" . What are you planning to make out of it?
