Mui Wo, A beautiful village in Hong Kong 梅窩，一個美麗村落

Hong Kong consists of 263 islands. The biggest one is the Lantau Island. Before 1997, Lantau Island can only be reached by Ferry so Lantau was not developed and kept the original old Hong Kong style until 1997.

In 1997 and 1998, the Hong Kong Airport started operating on Lantau, with the Tsing Ma Bridge connected between Lantau and Hong Kong Main District. There is a great change in Lantau Island. And last Friday, I attended a meeting in Mui Wo, a beautiful village on the Lantau Island!

香港擁有263個島嶼，最大的一個叫大嶼山，也就是你們平常從機場出去那個了。在1997年之前，我們只能乘搭渡輪往大嶼山，所以大嶼山一直都沒有什麼發展，保持了傳統老香港的漁村風味，直到1997。

1997年，青馬大橋落成，連接大嶼山及香港市區，1998年新香港國際機場於大嶼山北的赤臘角開始營運，大嶼山開始了巨大變化。多年來除了機場及東涌，都沒有去大嶼山其他地方，上星期五，因為出席會議，讓我來到了大嶼山上久違的村落，梅窩。

Mui Wo is a small village on the Lantau Island. before 1997, it is one of the most developed area of the Lantau Island as it is closest to HK Island. When visiting Lantau Island, most people took ferry to Mui Wo first. but since the Tsing Ma Bridge was built, Mui Wo lost its position as transportation point. People preferred to visit other tourist spots on the Lantau like the Big Buddha, Ngong Ping 360 and Tai O. Mui Wo become a small village again.

梅窩是大嶼山上一個小村落，相傳南宋末帝帝昺逃難到南方時，就曾在梅窩一帶逗留登基。在1997年之前，大嶼山只有兩個地方可以坐船到市區，梅窩就是其中之一，所以梅窩一直是大嶼山的交通轉接站，是大嶼山發展最好的地方之一。但自從青馬大橋落成後，梅窩就失去了它的位置，市民遊客們都選擇陸路去大嶼山，去探索遊覽其他景點，如大佛、昂坪360、大澳等等，梅窩重回安靜的小村。

My last visit to Mui Wo should be over 20 years ago. When I came Mui Wo again, I found there is nearly no change! The pier, the bus stop, the old house, the only change is the ferry fee!

距我上次到梅窩已經超過20年了，那一次去還是因為學校旅行。這次重遊梅窩，倒發現沒有什麼改變！碼頭、巴士總站、舊唐樓，都是一樣，唯一改變了的只是船的票價！

After meeting, clients took us to an old HK style restaurant for lunch. They are indigenous inhabitants and obviously they know all the people in the restaurant. Yes, Mui Wo is a small village with only around 5000 residents.

會議後，客人帶我們到梅窩市內的茶餐廳午餐。她們是梅窩原居民，見到她們和很多居民都很熟似的，對，梅窩人口只有5千。

When I was small (before 1997), Mui Wo is a popular place for school picnic and travel. And now, should I say thanks to Tsing Ma Bridge? Mui Wo comes back to a peaceful village without tourists. But, since the announcement of the “Lantau Tomorrow Vision”, Lantau will soon experience a great development. As part of Lantau, Mui Wo will soon have quick change. Just see if the change is a good change or bad change.

還記得小時候，梅窩是學校旅行的熱門地點，現在，不知是否要多謝青馬大橋？梅窩回歸寧靜。不過，只從政府發佈了「明日大嶼願景」後，大嶼山將必經歷一場驚天動地的變化，作為大嶼山的一部份，梅窩也不能倖免。就只寄望，在發展的同時，舊有東西不要破壞得太多吧。
