Hey Jessies of the night
Did we all have a good nights rest or have you been burning the midnight oil? Working into the early hours of the night has always been seen as a sign of commitment, dedication, hard graft and outworking the competition.
I know I used to think along those lines when I started my first job, always willing to take work home with me, work longer hours for no extra salary, come in early and show my commitment. I thought I would be rewarded for it eventually and I was, just not in the way I thought.
The company didn't very much care, but for me, the value I got out of it was learning all sorts of new skills, that made me almost indispensable at times. It opened me up to new possibilities and ways of thinking and while it wasn't the reward I was looking for, its more than paid itself back over time.
I'm bringing flexi back
I've worked in places where you had to clock in and out at specific times and I worked at places that had pretty relaxed flexi times which I pushed to the max but it really worked for me, that little bit of perceived freedom really gave me added motivation to do my work and excel it at, as I was doing it on my so-called terms.
As remote work and the gig economy begins to grow and attract top talent companies looking to retain their best workers will need to be a bit more flexible in their thinking. While working from home may be one option that is becoming a standard in some tech environments, some companies aren't comfortable with content leaving the office or working via VPN's.
Which brings me to my suggestion, we've had night staff in may professions and while this has been seen as a grudge job and having to be paid extra to keep workers what if it became a choice. What if night owl workers who wanted to avoid traffic, who wanted to work in peace and quiet or who needed more office resources could work after hours.
What if there was staff that would alternate so instead of your office sitting dormant at night you're getting the full value of your building rental having a steady stream of people working whenever they please. As long as they complete their assigned tasks at the correct level of quality what does it really matter?
What are we so afraid of? Why do companies want to retain so much control? Why hire an expert and then tell them how to work? Why not let them do what they do best, when they do best?
Have your say
Do you think the 9 - 5 is due for revision?

I have had a couple of night jobs and always prefer them to day jobs. Just so much less hassle all round.

I never had a night job but I would try to come in super early and get as much done before the crowd arrives and then leave early to beat traffic! The days I did that would always be more productive than the days I came in at the normal time

Can we be called lurkers instead. I think it would add more street cred to my rep if i were called a lurker as opposed to a night owl! None the less I agree, give the peeps what they want! I work better under less constraints as well. Unless people prove to you they need structure, give it to them. If they adult enough to manage themselves let them. Schools out and we don't need no hall monitors at work!

Lol lurkers sound a lot like creepers I guess we could do a rebranding on it! Lurking in the shadows shouldn’t be seen as a negative thing any longer

Yeah let's band against the negative connotations of lurkers. Lurkers have feelings too. I can just hear them remaking old blue eye's classic, lurkers in the niiigghhtttt....

I have always absolutely preferred working at night throughout my entire life, and I am 53 now!
Many years ago as an employee, I would volunteer straightaway for night shifts and then as a small businessman and then freelancer, I much prefer to work at night in the peace and tranquillity it brings that allow me to achieve much more productivity in much less time without the constant distraction of 'normal working hours clutter'.
I aim to sleep when I'm tired and eat when I'm hungry and listen to what my body is telling me to give myself the best chance at filling my waking hours with whatever I need to do make myself happy!
I get so bored with hearing how waking up at the crack of dawn is the only way to be productive, its whatever suits the individual that matters.

That’s what I was thinking, if people are just allowed to work when they feel comfortable you may just find that you can increase productivity without having to throw money at the problem or some other silly perks
I think companies focus too much on the process that brings them some sort of outcome instead of how to improve getting the outcome!

Well they don’t really think past profits in most cases! There are very few companies that are innovative in hey all copy the same model that is deemed successful that’s why startups and small businesses are so important for growth

9-5 is for sure due for revision. And its possible. Plenty of organisations work 24/24, people function way better at times they feel fit.
We do not all have the same biorhythm.
You have my vote, I resteem and I am here to pimp your post.

Yeah with the internet and a global market now businesses are competing on more fronts than before and need to look at different ways of using human capital to get the best results!
I think with automation coming too, the 9-5 will look a lot different in years to come

I’m a night owl (and a Jessie!). I have always thought what you stated in this post. It reminds me of a bumper sticker an old boyfriend used to have. The moral majority is neither. Just because that’s the way we’ve always done it doesn’t make it right. When folks let me work when I’m at my best, they have a better employee.

Welcome! Nice to see a new Jessie in the comments! Indeed, there’s a real belief that what worked before will always work and work for everyone!
I’m not saying cater to every employees demands but there are certain things that could be beneficial that shouldn’t just be dismissed!
It never hurts to try
