I have never worked well under pressure.
That manifests in a number of ways, most of which served as a distinct hindrance during the years I was working in corporate America.
The Heart of a Slacker
Close-up of a Salmonberry blossom
Most of my problems are self-made, of course. Somehow, it seems I must have been standing in the back of the room when the Gods handed out "work ethic." And you certainly could never describe me as a "go getter."
For one, if you tell me something is due on the 25th-- and today is the 10th-- it's a good bet I won't even start looking at it till around the 20th.
In a sense, knowing that a deadline is "a ways off" is generally a rationalization for me to sit down and pretty much do nothing.
Such is the life of a creative slacker... I do my best work while "falling off a cliff," right before something is due... but as soon as I am done with the falling bit, I will probably stop working again.
So How Do You Manage That in Our Ambitious World?
I suppose it's a bit of a strange way to be, in this world where everything seems to revolve around ambition, accomplishment and success.
Heart of a rose
In looking back through the years, my desire in life... pretty much since I was little... has been to sit still and do as little as possible.
It used to concern my mom-- who was as wound up as a Hummingbird on crack and a social butterfly to boot-- I was much too slow and quiet for her liking. And yet? She never really managed to goad me into doing things, in spite of enrolling me in 45 different activities and lessons.
In school, I was a solid B+/A- student... good enough to keep me out of trouble, not so good anyone really noticed me. Knowing what I know... had I been one of those "driven" types, I would probably have been a straight A student.
I was always better at living as a human BE-ing than a human DO-ing... and-- as an adult-- I have also minimized any tendencies to become a human HAVE-ing.
Dealing with Reality
Of course, the reality is that I do live in a world of deadlines and work that must be done by certain times. One of the skills that helps me navigate it is being exceptionally good at estimating exactly how long something will take me to complete.
English lavender in bloom
I also don't agree to anyone else's interpretation of "how long" something will take to complete. It may sound arrogant, but odds are they are wrong. Not because they are stupid, but because we live in a world where people have been trained to exaggerate their abilities in order to "get the prize." I have no room for those who would say "Oh yeah, we can get that done by lunch!" when it's perfectly obvious it can't be done before evening.
Be impeccably organized. It often frustrates people I work with that I will spend more time putting all the "components" of a project in perfect order than actually working. Thing is? When I do work, I can do it five times faster than you.
Avoid perfectionism. This one is hard for me, as I tend to be perfectionistic... but I tend to reserve that for myself. In general, the world is sloppy, so giving someone "the 98% solution" where 90% is considered "excellent" is more than enough!
Know your limitations... and don't say "yes" to stuff you know you'll have to "learn on the fly." The time to expand your skill set is not while working under a deadline.
In General, Just AVOID Deadlines!
One of the reasons Steemit works so well for me as a writing venue is that there really are no deadlines here. I don't have an editor breathing down my neck, asking for articles... or revisions... or re-writes.
Heart of a Daisy
The interesting side effect of that is that I am actually producing far more "magazine quality" articles/posts than I have for pretty much any other venue I have been part of, since maybe 2005!
The bottom line here is simply "Know yourself!" and that includes knowing that you don't work well with deadlines, and you don't like others telling you what to do, and accepting that you might tend towards being both lazy and a bit of a self-important twat. I also know that I don't tend to "play well with others" because I have a rather ruthless let's-get-this-DONE approach once I finally get in motion with something. I'm not there to "socialize," I'm there to get things finished so I can go back to doing nothing!
It's really OK to "judge" yourself thusly, and a lot better than setting up false expectations and then having others pass that same judgment on you!
How about YOU? How are you with working to deadlines? Do you mind them well in advance? Or are you a "last minute frantic work" person? Are you an ambitious go-getter, when it comes to projects and work? Or are you more laid back and casual? Are you good at teamwork, or more of a solitary performer? Leave a comment-- share your experiences-- be part of the conversation!

I have, I guess, deadline addiction. Without deadline pressure, I cannot work effectively

Are you by any chance describing ME? I'm a great procrastinator. I'm slow, but generally quite accurate. Grades in school... same, more or less. I prefer to think about how to do something rather than just dive in and do it.
I can recall a time many years ago where I was re-conditioning some parts at work. Another co-worker was working at the bench beside me and his hands were just flying all over the place and I was in awe how fast he was working. I just kept putzing along all day and at the end of the day, I counted how many I had done versus how many 'Speedy Gonzales' had done. I was shocked to see that we both completed and equal number! He looked to be moving at least 50% faster than I was, so how did he not manage to do more? I guess he was a magician at making it LOOK like he was working fast. Sure had me fooled! Obviously looks can be deceiving.

"Slow but accurate and top quality product" has pretty much been my M.O. since... as long as I can remember.
I have always prided myself on doing good work and on accomplishing things with minimal disruption and effort. I used to get hired quite a bit as a house painted specifically because I could paint without turning a house inside out and having to move everything in the house and plastic and tarps everywhere. Yes, it took me twice the time of other painters, but never a drop spilled or any dust anywhere...

Excellent post @denmarkguy :)
I tend to be more slackerish when it involves something I'm not interested in or my heart isn't in..but I'm getting better at directing my time & energy into more things that I love and am passionate about :) (Steemit has and continues to help me open my eyes and my heart with authors like you and articles like this one and many others.)
I also don't like deadlines very much and tend to wait until the last minute before I get it done. I work well in teams that are comprised of members of what I consider my Soul Tribe - but if its just random people or co-workers I try my best to avoid it. I do my best to maintain my energetic integrity and sometimes that calls for "backing out". As you can imagine, I am very comfortable working solitary. I quite injoy my personal space/alone time and tend to be highly productive in that kind of environment.
Thank you for Being You @denmarkguy & always sharing such high quality, thought provoking articles. I am learning alot from you and I really appreciate it.
Bright Blessings & Much Love - Have a wonderful evening

Thanks @reiki-trail, appreciate the supportive words.
I definitely am more inclined to focus my energies on things I feel passionate about, but I am definitely a "soltitary practitioner" in most of my endeavors. Of course, that holds true for being a writer, as well... one of the areas I have considerable passion for.

I tend to over plan for things and create deadlines far into the future that leave people’s mouth ajar and wondering what kind of crazy person was allowed into the area.
For instance when I had a meeting with a guidance consular during my first week in college. I had a 10 year plan worked out. Including all the teachers and classes schedule for just over 2 years at the college. Back up teachers listed, and classes if those filled. Company’s I wanted to work for after graduate, college and programs and professors at those colleges I wanted to be student off after getting 3 years of work related expernice. When I wanted to take my exams to be a CPA after meeting the educational and work requirements (never happened beyond graduating).
The guy was in total shock and just kept nodding his head saying "I never had anyone like you in my office before you will go far." Oddly enough the next day I was emailed about being transferred to another person lol.
My issue is things just never work out. Even when I try and make things as redundant and possible in terms of a deadline as I can.
So when things fail I fall onto back up plans of back up plans. I revaluate every so often and make sure I am doing all I can. I need that schedule and deadline because I always want to do more. It’s the only way I can try and work out how to do everything.

Even here on Steemit, one of the things I keep "pounding" at people every time new changes are proposed is "How is this going to affect us 5 years, 10 years from now?" Which is generally NOT a popular approach... pretty much ANYwhere, because people just care about results now, or so it seems.
I suppose "things don't work out" because the majority lacks the vision-- and bandwidth-- to think in such terms. I can tell myself that my way "makes more sense" in the long run... but if most people don't care, that doesn't amount to a hill of beans, except to the extent I have a minimal amount of control over my own life and plans. So I try to stick with that... and otherwise "lead by example," when that is called for.

I definitely hate the short term minded most world works on. It’s one thing to test stuff out in a small batch with a control group and see how the numbers perform for short term gains. It’s another just too only focus on short term. Everyone always expect that next big thing to be almost be here in their lives that will change everything for the better. These people’s long term thinking tends to be wait for the short term that never happens for them.
While I am fine trying things out for short term in mind. I always want think like you do in long term conditions.

I am a master procrastinator! :D I can relate to much of what you have described here. I've learned in the past few years, just to say no when I can, and when I can't.... well, I'll start working on it when I have to lol. Great post! :)

Ohhh I hate deadlines!! As soon as I've got a deadline I get all nervous about it, and this nervousness doesn't disappear until I've done whatever needs doing. It kind of just nags at the back of my mind.
For this reason, I'm a big proponent of super high level organisation, and I prefer to work on my own. I used to do client work in my field (SEO and writing), but just found it soooo stressful that I opted out and now just build my own websites and write my own stuff.
I have actually spent months perfecting my own organisational system that uses a combination of daily to do lists and the Eisenhower matrix, along with weekly goal setting for the different roles I play (i.e. mother, wife, friend, entrepreneur, steemit user, SEO etc etc.)
Also, I find I have to be super organised with planning my down time, because otherwise I will just push, push, push, work, work, work... and end up burning out.
Cheers for the great post!

Thanks @johleen... I definitely read shades of myself here; I have almost always made up for what I lack in determination and drive by being really well organized. I'm also very much a "solitary practitioner." As they said back in school-- "does not play well with others."

Enjoyed this and yes, procrastination is real - at least in my life it is. I like to think I'm ambitious, most people think I am, but the reality is I really don't want to bust my butt all the time.
Ambitiously lazy, as I like to say. Work hard for a short while to setup something that will pay dividends for an extended period. That's what keep me motivated...that thought of getting to be lazy.

"Ambitiously lazy." I like that. One of the reasons I always liked the idea of writing was "residual income." I liked the idea of working hard to complete and publish a book... and then hopefully have an income stream for some months or years after that... especially writing in non-fiction, as I do.

Exactly, residual income. It's why I wrote my ScaredyCatGuide Rental Property Investing book (which needs to sell more on amazon...lol) and why I own rental properties.
Gotta get to that autopilot position!
