An 18-year-old Adelaide cyclist is about to take on the world with just two pairs of socks, a beanie and a photo of his late grandmother tucked into his back pocket.

Jimmy Ashby wiped away tears as he farewelled friends and family at Victoria Square in Adelaide on Saturday, vying to become the youngest person to cycle 29,000 kilometres around the globe.

"When I'm struggling, you guys might get a call — me and a few tears, maybe scared [and] lonely — but you guys are going to help me so, thank you," he said to his supporters as he saddled up to hit the road.

Over the next seven to nine months, Jimmy plans to ride across Australia before flying to New Zealand where he will cycle from north to south before taking on the United States.
