The 'Statue of Liberty' was gifted to the United States of America by France in 1886. The statue was designed by French sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi and the metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel, who also designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The statue was given as a gift to commemorate the centennial of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence.
