On 1 January 2017, for the first time in Germany's history, electricity demand was fully covered by renewable energies, according to the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. Wind turbines alone covered 85% of demand.

This historic first occurred on the first day of the year, at 6am. Electricity demand was very low at that time: half a normal business day while production was very high with sustained wind. If wind energy could then cover 85% of the demand, hydro and biomass could meet the rest of the demand. At that time, solar energy was naturally out of play because of the darkness.Germany has seen New Year's day as in Belgium negative electricity prices. That means the producers had to pay to get rid of their electricity.
