I would think that at some point, all true democracies become illiberal since the majority imposes its collective will on the minority. In a constitutional republic, there are protections in place that can mitigate this risk somewhat.

While the right is moving towards classical authoritarianism complete with male chauvinism, what passes for liberalism on the left has come far from the ideals of classical liberalism when it comes to freedom of expression in particular. In my opinion, freedom has been under assault from both the left and the right in recent times.
We are living in interesting times. We shall see how unstoppable decentralization will be in the coming decades. It seems to me that decentralization through the blockchain has potential to tip the scales back in favour of liberty.

Totally? I would say progressivism is no monolith. There is both liberal and authoritarian progressivism.
