The full thread and piece are good. He mentions two possible hypotheses for this. One is negative polarization - young men feeling threatened and taking the opposite position of women as a result. The other is that young men and young women are increasingly inhabiting different information ecosystems.

The second one seems more robust to me to cross-country explanations. I loathe Andrew Tate and Jordan Peterson, but unfortunately they are very popular among young men. It is remarkable how fast you can end up in that internet pipeline with just a couple clicks on YouTube or TikTok. I was getting served up freaking Ben Shapiro and Bill Maher discussing Ukraine videos lol.

I think my main disagreement with the author is on toxic masculinity. I think identifying it and discussing it is a huge part of the solution. Sure we shouldn't blame young men for their shitty role models, but good male role models already exist! There are tons of great male celebrities that don't lean into toxic masculinity. We should criticize the Tates of the world and elevate people like The Rock or Dwyane Wade. In sports alone there are so many good examples.

And we should identify these habits that feed into themselves and isolate young men and make them anti-social.
