The home game app World Cricket Championship 2 (WCC2) became the winner of the ‘Gaming’ nominees for the Aatmanirbhar Bharat App Innovation Challenge.

The World Cricket Championship 2 (best known for WCC2), a prestigious cricket match, became the winner of the people's selection of games in the Aatmanirbhar Bharat App Innovation Challenge for PM Modi. It received 74 percent of the votes cast in the category, and came third in the jury.

The handiwork of Nextwave Multimedia, a Chennai-based developer of interactive mobile games and with the help of the major sports company Natara Technologies, WCC2 has been a complete winner since its launch in 2015.

From being one of the most award-winning mobile games in India to being one of the world's top 10 best monthly games (according to App Annie) to the rankings of the Google Play Store Editor's Choice category, WCC2 has done it all.

It is the second game in the WCC franchise (IP hosted by Nextwave Multimedia). Other apps in the series are WCC Lite, WCC Rivals, and WCC3 which will be launched soon. In all, WCC applications have collected more than 140 million installs on all devices.

By early 2020, the WCC MAU and DAU reached a peak of 15 million and 3.5 million respectively, earning growth due to mobile game locks. WCC2 alone counts over 50 million downloads in the Google Play Store.

The home-grown mobile game is a global empire, attracting users from more than 150 countries. It has a loyal fan base in many countries playing cricket, including England, Australia, the UAE, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Rajendran PR, Founder and CEO of Nextwave Multimedia said,

“Some years ago, an investor told me ‘there’s no reason for a game development company to exist in India’. Now, when I hear the Prime Minister saying build games and go global, you know the world has changed. The Aatmanirbhar Bharat App Innovation Challenge is a positive reinforcement for a sector that requires multiple skills. It is more difficult to build a game than most other software. The government push brings focus to the sector and creates an overall positive environment.”

Features of WCC2 and why it is a hit

WCC2 is a mobile video simulation game that mimics real cricket, including leagues, stadiums, players, skills, strategies, rewards, leader boards, training, game predictions, camera angles, lighting, etc.

In the absence of in-stadia cricket due to the epidemic, the animated nature of WCC2 is the closest one fans can find in the sport itself. Users get to choose from 11 different tournaments, including the IPL, World T20 Cup, Asia Cup, Big Bash, Ashes, World Cup, and a two-nation series.

The app provides 18 overseas and 10 home teams, 42 stadiums, multiple leagues throughout the trial, ODIs, and T20s, 150 animations, 28 bowling acts, true football physics depending on the holes (flat, dusty, green), player-specific reactions, strong earth sounds, night mode game with LED degrees, etc.

Users can choose from three multi-player formats: multi-player offline, multi-player online, and multiplayer. WCC2 comes with features of community sports such as 'Challenge a Friend', 'Gangs of Cricket', and 'World Tour'.

The average time spent on the app increased by 20 percent on the lock function, and the use of its ‘Local Rivals’ mode shot 250 percent. “This method allows you to play offline with someone close to you - friends or family. This usage has increased during the closing period, ”shared the founder.

Without the full gaming experience created by WCC2, building a rich game is a “difficult” and long process, he says.

Rajendran elaborates,

“Sports simulation games are very tough to build. They are casual to mid-core gaming apps that have to be realistic and visually appealing with quality gameplay and animation that can wow fans. These are expensive to build, and you have to plan for the long term, keep investing in the product and rolling out continuous updates to ensure that the game gets a long shelf life. Updates are the single biggest thing in these games.”

Gaming apps also call for a “multi-skilled” mindset. “You need many skills to create a solid gaming product... software, AI, physics, motion, design, animation, and community building — everything,” he adds.
