England have a huge chance to progress to the last 8 of the World Cup!

It's England v Columbia this evening in the World Cup and what an open and enthralling tournament it has been so far. Can England over-perform and reach the last 8, or further?!

The bookmaker's odds in the UK for England in major finals have been ridiculously short for decades. Single figure odds for a team that hasn't done anything in 20 years has been no value at all, and the 16/1 on offer at the start of the tournament also looked very ungenerous.

This is the first time since I can remember though that the manager has had a good clear-out of the oldies - These guys have won many honors at club level (Rooney, Lampard, Terry, Milner, etc), but have nothing to speak of at international level, and so it was certainly about time for a change - almost without risk.

The World Cup of 2018 is also looking like the most open finals in recent history too. Holland and Italy didn't even qualify - finalists and semi-finalists in recent years gone by. And already, Argentina are out, and Spain who dominated the world less than 6 years ago are also watching from the sidelines. We almost lost Belgium last night, and the lowest ranked team in the tournament, Russia, are in the last 8 and looking like a difficult team to beat on home soil.

Summer in Russia

It seems like the temperature has shocked a few teams. This shouldn't really have been an issue to many groups coming from the Americas, and in today's game you would expect most players to be able to see out 90 minutes as they do week in week out at club level. Seemingly though, teams are running out of gas towards the final quarter of the game, and being punished for it.

France, with a young, athletic midfield, took control off the game against Argentina the other day and looked like they would run riot. The Argentinians had the 4th oldest squad in the World Cup, and France have the 3rd youngest. source For me, this looked very obvious in the 2nd half of this game the other day, and I'm wondering if it will be a them as we continue into the tournament.

England's youth

England have the 2nd youngest squad at the World Cup. Due to qualifying for the second round 'early' they were able to rest 8/9 of the starting 11 from these games against Belgium (who just sneaked past a very fit looking Korean team last night who were unlucky not to earn extra time).

Columbia have an average squad member age of 28.1, and England's is 26. The Colombians are also likely to be without their star player James Rodríguez, who collected the golden boot at the last World Cup. Can these two factors be the difference tonight? The forecast for this evening is showing a much cooler temperature than the 27/28 degrees reported during the recent matches, and so perhaps we wont be seeing players pulling up for cramp within the 90 minutes.

I didn't give England a hope in hell prior to the start of the tournament, but aside from France and Brazil, (France are my tip to lift the cup), I think we have the players to cause teams trouble. The 3 centreback's are all dangerous in the air, Harry Kane clearly knows where the goal is (great penalties last week!), and there is plenty of energy and pace in the midfield to bring danger on the break.

Games within the beautiful game

My concern for the young squad is the 'gamesmanship' that goes on at major finals. Diving, play-acting, time-wasting, and more recently, wrestling moves in the penalty area, are all there to frustrate the opposition and fool the referee's. It is here that I think England lack, and suspect that the team is one of the most 'honest' still left in the competition.

In recent history, England have been 'done' by handballs, play-acting, and clear goals over the line that have not been given - So happy to see the Germans sent home by VAR and I think there is something just about that if you are an England fan!

England have also suffered in knockout games of major tournaments and haven't won a game like this since 2006 - the last one being on penalties at Euro 96, hosted in the UK. Since then, penalty shootout defeats to Germany, Argentina, Portugal (twice) and Italy have ended England’s run at major tournaments. Again it was our older and more experienced players who failed to keep their composure - will the younger, and potentially more fearless players overcome the 42 year hoodoo?

It could all be over by tonight, but these finals are there for the taking - Can England step up and progress into the last 8?

Enjoy the football - Come on England!

Asher

BOOOOOOOOOOM!

Get in ENGLAND!

We won on penalties, so that now proves beyond any shadow of a doubt, that god exists lol, It's coming home it's coming home, well maybe anyway.

Get in! Finally! Same again on Saturday?

We will have to wait and see, the one thing that worries me, is the lack of chances or shots from open play, they seem to be relying on set pieces and we have been sussed out for that.

I'm hoping Sweden will come out and play. We have the players to do well on the break but most teams have just sat back. I'm not sure using wrestling moves and other underhand tactics means we've been sussed. Hopefully the Swedes won't be as dirty!

Be hard to be as dirty as the last 2 teams, and you are right, Sweden would be hard pushed to play that style of dirty tactics, though you would think with this off the pitch video system, that a few Colombians would have been sent off for those headbutts.

How that was not a red I don't know. The whole point of the system is to spot and act on stuff like this appropriately. Violent conduct is a red!

It's amazing to think that one of these four countries is heading to a WC final: England, Sweden, Russia, Croatia.

2-1
England wins

Confidence in England - that's what I like to hear!

You are entry two in the contest with 2 - 1 England.

They never lost before from Colombia!

Hi Asher. This is the huge opportunity that they need to grasp. Once its trimmed down to 8 it is only 3 matches to the trophy. If they can't do it now then who knows when it will happen again. England 3 - 1 tonight.

It's a great opportunity isn't it! England's under 19's and 17's have won major finals in the past year, can the big boys do the same? :)

You are entry three in the contest with 3 - 1 England.

Ciao Asher!!!
My Argentina is out... but there is still Switzerland!!!

England-Colombia 2:2

Enjoy the World Cup!!!

Big plastic hug
Steemitri The Mannequin

Yes and they have a great chance this afternoon - I am going to watch the game now. Good luck!

You are entry one for the contest with 2-2.

Enjoy!

yes it is so much dissapointed while now whose team you are supporting @steemitri

Hi! I'm a swiss-argentinian mannequin... so Hopp Schwiiz (C'mon Switzerland)!!!

England wins 2-1

Sounds good!

You are entry four in the contest with 2-1 England.

4 is a cool number.

I haven't been following the world cup at all, except the last minutes of the Germany game where there was such a kerfuffle in the house I just had to see what all the fuss was about.

thanks for being me up to speed @abh12345

I'll go 3-1 to England. 😁

Up to speed with a rather large emphasis on my home nation 😁 Hopefully there will be an even bigger kerfuffle this evening!

Entry 5 - 3-1 England.

Well as long as the kerfuffle is in our favour @abh12345 and everyone gets over their excitement and is in bed by 10.30 p.m. 😂

I requested a hug be given you by your expected visitor so please feel free to issue a reminder if it's not freely offered. 😂 Oh yeah, and while you're at it put in a good word of how worthy I am of being added to an automatic upvote trail.

Yep. It's official. I have no shame!!!

Enjoy the match. 😊

3:2
England: Colombia

GOOD LUCK Man!

I like the sound of a 5 goal thriller, cheers dude!

You are entry six in the contest with 3-2 England.

I'm going 1-1 after 90 mins :-)
England win this and its an England - Brazil final I reckon :-) (thanks Belguim ;-) )

Well done! Gamesmanship eh!

That would be epic!

Entry 8 - 1-1

yup...and a sweet sweet victory in the semis to shut the ruskies up lol :-)

and thank you :-)

I think the time has come for the Ruskies to say goodbye 😁

Both of these nations have a history of under-performing at World Cups. England has had the talent but not the teamwork to succeed at previous World Cups. I think Kane and this younger group have a much better team spirit than years past but my concern for this game is that England has not really been tested or established themselves yet because of how their group play went. They barely escaped with a win over Tunisia and didn't dominate the play, then had a gimme game versus Panama, and fielded a second string team versus Belgium. Colombia on the other hand had close and competitive games against good teams and have their best results in their more recent games. They look like they have good team chemistry which is very important for international games. England can easily win with their talent or by Colombia crumbling, but I am going with Colombia winning 2-1.

A fair assessment, much more balanced than mine!

Entry 7 - 2-1 Columbia

England in this championship among the main contenders for the victory. What is just the fact that all the players of the national team play in the domestic championship. My forecast England 2 - 0 Colombia

Siding with England, thanks @cranium 😁

Entry 9 - 2-0 England

Glad to see England doing this well in the World Cup

A win tonight would be doing well, we've not won a knockout game for a while!

It is very possible against a team like Colombia...

After 90 minutes, 1-1.

35 minutes in when your selection came in but I'll let you off 😁

Your so kind...., thanks :)

Thank you for this opportunity
England 3 - 1 Colombia

Entry 11 - 3-1 England

Thank you for this opportunity
England 3 - 0 Colombia

Entry 10 3-0 England!

Man last night Belgium ran away with game in last 25 minutes............ had me holding my breath for a long time.

They didn't really well to recover from 2 excellent goals by Korea!

This world cup has been very unpredictable. Teams you thought would progress are not the ones progressing. Even Belgium were very lucky yesterday. The Japanese team really scared the hell out of them. So this England vs columbia game, each team has 50% chance of progressing. The team that will make good use of its goal scoring opportunities will likely carry the day

I agree, it's a very open competition and there for the taking - let's see how England can do later 🤞🏽

England running there best form. Everyone is trying to play with their hundred percent, which is expected to give England victory, England hope to finish in the last 8

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I agree, good luck England!

What do you think tonight score will be?

This year's World Cup is different from all the other World Cups, smaller teams are playing well, I hope the England will win, but goals are very difficult

Agreed, the competition is very open!

Yes it will be a great game i also waiting for this game there is no big name in this team but had lot of talent in their squad wishing them best of luck

Great :)

What do you think the score will be?

@abh12345 don't flag me but....England loses today. You heard it from me first...lol

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

haha, well 2nd actually but I hear you - As mentioned above, it's been a very long time since England won a knockout game, and some bookmakers seem to think it wont be this time!

Fabulous one!!!

:D

What do you think the score will be?

I'll go for 0:0 with Columbia winning on penalties.

My favourite games football. very beautiful post sir .I love football. thanks for sharing your post sir

Thank you sir!

What do you think the score will be?

You are most welcome sir

well with each match the excitement is at its peak this is turning out to be the best world cup ever

i think England will win the game because they have very strong team management

fingered-crossed :)

What do you think the score will be?

England will win the match

What do you think the score will be?

I remember your scepticism at the beginning of the tournament. I has to miss this last game, but I was pleasantly surprised that they actually played verh well. I think a lot of people in England had serious doubts about the fact that the coach chose for a young team. I guess they’ll be thanking him for doing this by now :0)

Yep - I didn't give us a chance, the same for many Brits. Picking a young team has taken the pressure off the coach and the players, but I bet they are starting to feel it now 😊

I’m pretty sure they do, lol

Let the games commence!

Well, they managed to get through, in the end! I wonder if that means the long streak of misfortune has finally been broken? Sweden will be no easy task...

=^..^=

That's what I'm hoping - the penalty jinx has been lifted! Sweden are a much 'fairer' team, it should be a great game 😁

Hi, sorry to gatecrash your thread here.. But I saw you just unvoted me as a witness. If that is because my witness is disabled - I feel to point out that this is because my server is having to completely redownload the entire blockchain from scratch since the freeze of the blockchain corrupted the file store on my server (And other servers too it appears).
I expect the server to be back up again by tomorrow and will also be setting up a backup server that uses Docker which will hopefully prevent this occurring in the future. Once the backup server is in place, I will be able to install Docker on the original server too. The reason I am not already using Docker (which makes processes quicker) is that it simply didn't work for me - after a week of trying, along with help from tim cliff and others.

Hi, yes it is.

We lost 5 blocks too but have been back up since yesterday lunch....

It will likely return when all systems are go.

Ok, fair enough. If a local corruption takes place without docker being used - it can take a long time to get up and running again!

Hey again! So after a couple of sync processes (and discovering what was causing it all to run slowly) - the witness server is back processing blocks.. And I am off to set a second one up! It would be great if you'd consider revoting. cheers.

Done. I really should start asking people if they'd consider voting for our witness!

Excellent, thanks! I just voted for SteemCommunity. I hadn't seen that name as a witness until a couple of days ago when acidyo switched his vote for me to Steem Community. It's important to do some marketing, yes. :)

Thank you very much :)

The plan was to slowly introduce the witness as we learn what to do, but actually we've both been around long enough to know the ropes, but will need to build up our kit as time progresses.

Sure ok - at this point the 'big' witnesses seem to do very little publicly - so there's definitely room to gain support.

btw, i have just been looking through the top witnesses to get better acquainted with them and i noticed that @cervantes receives a huge amount of votes from larger accounts, but since he/she posts in Spanish and I don't speak it - I don't really know anything about them. I notice that you are voting for that account - can you give me any clue as to where to start learning about them?
Cheers

I listened to them on the MSP waves witness forum near the start of the year. I like the idea of 'team' witnesses and also that they are able to curate content, and encourage growth outside of English.

I could probably do with a recap on them actually...
