Idolatry is heresy: I will destroy every remnant of Baal worship in this place, the very names of the idolatrous priests

The prophet Zephaniah developed his prophetic activity probably before and during the reign of King Josiah, king of Judah. King Josiah was a man devoted to God, who followed the path of his ancestor King David, it was up to him to make a great religious reform against idolatry, which was already reaching scandalous levels in the kingdom of Judah. About this great King the Bible tells us: "Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the LORD as he did—with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses" 2 Kings 23:25.
By his great actions and by his love towards God, the Lord promised Josiah that he would die in peace and that he would not see the destruction of his kingdom at the hands of foreigners.
The prophet Zephaniah, before and during the life of this king, in a series of brief oracles, announced the arrival of difficult times; because the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Judah had fallen into the heresy of idolatry, which was a serious sin in the eyes of the Lord.
So Zephaniah prophesied the actions of Josiah and the arrival after him, of a judgment of the Lord on Israel:
"´I will stretch out my hand against Judah
and against all who live in Jerusalem.
I will destroy every remnant of Baal worship in this place,
the very names of the idolatrous priests—
those who bow down on the roofs
to worship the starry host,
those who bow down and swear by the LORD
and who also swear by Molek,
those who turn back from following the LORD
and neither seek the LORD nor inquire of him.´
Be silent before the Sovereign LORD,
for the day of the LORD is near" Zephaniah 1:4-7.
But the prophet Zephaniah also spoke to us of hope; and like Jesus, he spoke to us about the poor of spirit, and that God's blessings belong to them:
"Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land,
you who do what he commands.
Seek righteousness, seek humility;
perhaps you will be sheltered
on the day of the LORD's anger" Zephaniah 2:3.
The Bible constantly teaches us that men have to choose, the law and its wisdom bless man towards happiness and prosperity, but sin instead leads man to an uncertain and risky life.
