After the Reign of Solomon, the Bible tells how the religious and political schism occurred in the Holy Land with the division of the kingdoms of Judah and Israel.
After the assembly of Shechem, Jeroboam was proclaimed king of Israel, and Rehoboam retired to Jerusalem where he received the support of the tribe of Judah and that of Benjamin.
The Bible says that Jeroboam did what is evil in the eyes of God, and to ensure his reign he imposed heresy on his kingdom, creating a religious schism. King Jeroboam, most likely aided by nearby pagan nations such as the Phoenicians, imitated those who worshiped the Golden Calf on Mount Horeb with Moses. In this way, decadence and oppression began in the Kingdom of Israel, the fear of God was abandoned and idolatry began. Only the kings of Judah remained relatively faithful to the covenant with God, this made the kingdom of Judah more politically and socially stable, and survived the invasion of the Assyrians. The dynasty started by Jeroboam in Israel only lasted a few years, and ended with his son Nadab being killed by Basa.
With these words, the Bible recounts the religious schism initiated by Jeroboam:
"Jeroboam thought to himself, ´The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David. If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem, they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam.´
After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said, ´You've been worshiping in Jerusalem long enough. Israel, here are your gods who brought you out of Egypt.´ One he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan. And this thing became a sin; the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other." 1 Kings 12:26-30.
