Hey there you Steemy Poker peeps! Today's subject is Tournament Etiquette.
Etiquette?
Let's start super basic, to make sure we understand each other. I'm talking about how you should act during a tournament, and not necessarily only on lucksacks. Hopefully, these pointers will help you whenever and wherever you decide to play. To me, proper etiquette is really no more than politeness. I'm not trying to tell you to bend over backwards; to play soft or anything like that. Trust me, I can beast right along with you. However if we all agree to a certain set of 'rules', things run more smoothly and everyone understands what is expected from them.
Timing is Everything
Timing is everything, you know this. Remember how Phil Helmuth used to roll into WSOP tournaments late as hell, with a huge splashy entrance? You think that was because he was running late? Haaiil naw, fam. That was all to mess with everyone.
As online players, we understand that the amount of time before you check, fold, bet or raise matters. With that understanding, being late for a tournament or sitting out excessively matters. Let's say you repeatedly register, play your one hand and then sit out, it matters. It's rude, it interrupts the game flow and it can be viewed as scammy. If you find yourself in a tough spot once in a while and have to do this in order to play, I get it. Believe me, with the amount of distractions and whatnot I have going on in my house, I get it.
Also, I'm NOT talking about people like @jonsnow1983, @christ316 or others who have spotty internet reception due to their shoddy governments or location on this planet.
However, sometimes we need to make the tough call and not play a tournament if we can't commit the time and energy. Because here's the thing... this league is getting bigger every day, which is amazing. It also means that there are more people willing and able to play our tournaments, and to be fair you really should play what you can fully commit to.
Fiddy50's
We happen to have a specific type of tournament in which this Etiquette Rule makes a huge difference, the fiddy50's. Fiddy50's are limited to 10 players and half of the players win SBD. So you only have to outlast 5 other players in order to make the money. You can already see why this would be an issue, can't you? Let's say you register, play one hand and sit out in the hopes to sneak into the money. You are not only slowing the play down, you're changing odds and keeping the seat that an active player would like to inhabit. More than anything though, it's rude.
fiddy50's are to spread the wealth to people who may be super new to poker and those who can't commit to three hour long tournaments. Let's remember that @spl is a COMMUNITY and we are not only here to win juicy SBD's but to help each other grow as integral parts of our community and the bigger community of Steemit.
Take care, good luck out there and let's discuss whether or not you agree with me below in the comments. I'm down to be proven wrong, so let's talk!
Have a lucky day!
Ya, I messed up today and forgot I registered, apologies fam

nah, no worries @jakeybrown, that's the difference, you know? Not the few times it happens and there's nothing to be done, but habitually it's not cool.

I had a bad day registering and not playing today. multiple times. This is not normal for me. I was having issues with connection on phone today. I was out with the fam. :)
My issue with etiquette is people who regularly sit out after they get a little stack, doing it on purpose. Anything intentional that ruins other peoples games is bad etiquette at its core and should be avoided.

Well that's IT, @nicnas you're FIRED.
I'm kidding. ;) Everyone has bad days, it's like you said, people who regularly sit out isn't cool at all.
Bad form, I say! Bad form.

We all think we know; in fact, the "Time Appraisal" topic, which none of us know enough, has shown us what we can accomplish by knowing how to use time well.

I played the 30 sbd tourney for almost an hour and a half today. I forgot about a family meal and had to sit out and was unable to continue :( sorry to anyone who was at my table, I know it can be frustrating.

Can I offer a CryptoKitty as a prize for a tourney? might be fun :-)
I'm so poor I can hardly pay attention these days but would still like to contribute any way I still can. :-)
