Disney's story was based on a story written by Hans Christian Andersen. Now, the film in summary happens as follows: it begins with a young girl who turns 16 called Ariel, her father is King Triton, who rules the ocean, the seabed.
Ariel is a happy young woman, very curious about the human world and together with her friend Flounder, collects common objects for men such as forks, paintings, among others.
If father is concerned about his daughter and warns her that all contact between the human world and the world of mermaids and newts is prohibited. Also send the friendly crab Sebastian to watch over the princess. Despite her father's warnings, Ariel continues to go to the surface of the ocean, and she still dreams of one day being able to get to know the man's world and have a pair of legs to go for a walk.
One night, Ariel, Flounder and Sebastian travel to the surface of the sea attracted by lights and noise. This rampage turned out to be Prince Eric's birthday celebration, which occurred on a ship.

Although he could not see her very well, he was fascinated by the voice he heard while he was unconscious. And he understands that the voice was that of a girl who saved him from drowning. and he sets out to find it but is unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, Ariel was in the ocean thinking about Eric and wishing more of being part of the human world. The Triton King notices the change in Ariel's behavior, notices that she is in love and feels happy about it, he aspires that he tries to find out who the lucky young man is by asking Sebastian.
Pressed Sebastian confesses to King Triton that Ariel fell in love with a human; That infuriates the King, confronts Ariel and also destroys all the human objects that Ariel collected and had in his hiding place.

But still the prince lodges her in his castle, takes her to see the kingdom and they start spending time together.

Then Ursula transforms into a beautiful young woman and uses Ariel's voice to cast a spell on the prince and make him believe that she was the one who rescued him. Eric in view of the deception proposes marriage. The next morning, Ariel learns that Eric will marry a human girl named Vanessa and is deeply saddened but Scuttle (Ariel's friend bird) discovers that Vanessa is actually Ursula.
Since they realized the witch's trap; Sebastian goes in search of King Triton to warn him what happened, while Scuttle with the help of other animals tries to avoid the wedding.
In the midst of the disaster that was happening in the boat (since the wedding was going to take place in a boat), the evil Ursula loses the necklace where Ariel's voice was kept, and it breaks and the little mermaid recovers her voice. At the same time, the enchantment to which Eric was subjected is broken and he realizes that the young woman who rescued him is actually Ariel.
But it was already a little late, since the sun of the third day was setting, so as the witch had agreed and Ariel at that moment, Ariel became a mermaid again. And she was dragged by Ursula to her cave where she would be made prisoner. The king arrives at Ursula's cave and demands that he release Ariel, but she tells him that he cannot do it because they signed a contract. So King Triton agrees with Ursula to take Ariel's place, in exchange for his release.

Eric just at that moment to face Ursula, hurts her and because of what happened, the witch rages and with the help of magic increases her size, becoming immense. When that happens King Triton and the rest of the prisoners are released. King Triton takes possession of his trident again and regains his power over the ocean.
Already with the calm waters The king observes Ariel seeing the prince and is convinced that she really loves him, so with the help of his trident he turns her into a young human, so that she can live and be happy with him. Ariel comes out of evil turned into a girl and wearing a beautiful dress.
Soon she marries Prince Eric at a wedding that takes place on a ship, and everyone, human and mermaid, fish and shellfish, attends the little mermaid's wedding. Ariel says goodbye to her father, and although the king feels sad that his youngest daughter no longer lives with him, at the same time he feels happy because he knows that he is with the man he loves and that he looks happy.
