Our words are powerful,
Our tongues are lethal weapons.
Consider the damage you can do with an ill-considered,
Casual (to you), offhand remark.
A word said in a few
Seconds
Can open profound wounds in sensitive
People, that can take years to heal.
Consider your words very carefully.
Whenever you can,
Think about what you mean to say,
The REAL message you want to convey,
THEN choose what you say.
The cliché that goes:
‘Your mouth was in gear, but
Your brain wasn’t Driving’
Describes something
That should be avoided at
All costs.
Think about the
Consequences of your
Words, before you
Speak.
You can’t
‘Unsay’ a word
Once spoken.

Excellent advice!
My problem is that even if I think first, I fail to see how what I'm about to say could come across as offensive. My sister has the same malady.
But so much of what we say in the way of judging or offering an opinion is really not necessary. After more than half a century, I'm only just starting to internalize this. *sigh
Thanks for this reminder!

I guess I'm the same way, I'm sort of thick skinned, so when something I say causes
"Panties to get wadded up" I usually don't see why, but that doesn't change it.
There are things that get my goat that don't bother other people, so to each
His or her own I guess. I think the coin has two sides, and the one who is
Upset has a responsibility to try and see that the speaker didn't mean
To offend. My favorite way of thinking about it is this.
Words are sounds,.vibrations in the air that strike your eardrum. They do
You no harm at all until YOU GIVE THE WORDS MEANING, so therefore
The offensive meaning is your fault, isn't it?

Words do no harm until we give them meaning - there's truth in that!
Just don't tell me sound is nothing but a pressure wave (my electrical engineer husband does that), which means it's true that if a tree falls in a forest and no one is there to hear it, it doesn't make a sound. I refuse to believe that bluebirds are black, not blue, as well. Let's just reduce everything to perception vs reality, at that rate. -_-
I like your insight that the offended sometimes need to consider whether the offender intended to trespass.
