The Micro-Novel - A new and exciting tag / category for super short novels.

in writing •  9 years ago

Today I made my first couple posts to this site...I'm pretty excited about Steemit. This is a great idea and seems to be a fresh community of super rad people.

So as a poet and writer, I want to mostly share what I do best, poetry, short stories and philosophy-type blog entries.

I have this super short story, I call it a "micro novel", not sure if that's a real thing?? But it fits as the best description for this story. I have another one too, but this one is more dear to me and I wanted to share it here to help kick things off as an author on the site and in building my blog.

So, I started a new tag called appropriately, "micro-novel", to put these chapters and future novels in.

I know I said it's new and exciting? Well it's new, and I'm excited about it, but I guess that is relative. :)

I'm also excited to be in this community and look forward to a fun and engaging future!

Namaste,

John Oliver Westbrook

Hi John!

I'm also a writer and occasional poet, and I think your idea is interesting. My question would be, what are your thoughts on what differentiates a "micro-novel" from a short story or novella?

Hi and thanks for the comment/question. I guess for me it takes all the pressure off...sort of removes the "rules"? More like a poem, but an entire story? Honestly I don't know, I guess it needs to just sort of become what makes the most sense and provide some freedom to the author in things like chapter length, general format, etc. etc.

I see. I haven't particularly felt constrained by any rules in writing my novel or my poems, but I suppose creating an entirely new format is a good way to suggest from the start that the are no rules at all.

"More like a poem, but an entire story" makes me think of epic poems from history, like Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, but I suppose it's better not to make that association since that comes with something of a definition of its own.

In any case, good luck! If I post any writing that I think fits well as a "micro-novel," I'll use that tag myself.

Thanks! And likewise, I haven't felt particularly restrained either, just kind of a fun way to categorize tiny stories in my mind I guess...like I said, it should just become whatever fits for people, writers and readers alike.

Thanks for the comments and thoughts! Always nice to meet another poet.
