Why does past event written about in present tense in news articles?

"Because the writer chose it as a creative device"(June Casagrande). However, the incisive question is that whether or not it would enrich reader's experience. Yes, certainly. If editors and copy editors disagreed, it never would have made it into the newspaper that way.
