I recently got a notification saying I've been using steem for three years...
Apparently I joined in September 2016 and it was after @getonthetrain told me about it on Facebook.
I didn't really know who he was at the time as I add a lot of people on FB without knowing them.
And now I consider him to be a good friend even if we've never met in person.
He just mentioned it one day to me on one of the status updates I made and I Googled it and YouTubed it to learn more and I was excited and skeptical.
After researching it for around a week I decided to give it a try.
My first introduction post made a couple of dollars if I remember correctly and I was pretty hooked right away to know my first post made me more than all other social media combined.
I've never made a penny on any other social media.
And to be fair I haven't cashed any steem out yet so I haven't technically made anything here either.
But at one point in time my account was worth $50,000 when the value of steem was higher.
Now it's only worth a bit more than one thousand, but... That's still something.
I could cash it out and have something for my time which I've never experienced on any other social media.
I'm going to try to keep this short, but when I say that it often still ends up being really long lol, so... I'll do my best to keep it brief.
I've generally been very supportive and encouraging of steem, barely ever complained and mostly only showed thanks.
I still feel that way and am grateful for my experience on steem even if something happens and I never end up cashing out and made nothing in terms of money.
Early on I learned to try to look at steem less for the money and more for everything else it offers.
The new ideas here and the unique people here are fascinating. There's so many creative and interesting projects and communities.
The lack of censorship is one of my favorite things. I'm big on free speech and expression and that reason alone was enough for me.
And then I eventually took it a step further and took some of my initial earnings to create a contest/community of my own and... Wow. It changed my life, I was super depressed and it made me so much happier and helped so much. I'll never forget how influential and powerful that was for me...
Founding the @ifc has been one of the most memorable and important things to me in my life.
If it wasn't for steem or something like it I can pretty confidently say that would have never happened.
It's possible I could have at some point in the future come up with a similar idea without steem, but... I really doubt it.
I give a lot of respect and appreciation to steem because of that and I'll always be grateful even if I never see a penny.
In light of that I still got a bit frustrated with the recent Hardfork and made a post about it complaining.
Seemed like steemit inc had been making a bunch of mistakes for quite a while and the value kept dropping and then this new "20 steem rule" which rewards posts or comments of 20 steem or more with more steem and those less than that with less upset me. Seems like it makes it much more difficult for smaller accounts and easier for those in the in crowds or who are popular.
I still think it's a bad rule that will discourage smaller users, but they did some other stuff in the Hardfork as well which seem to have really helped.
The 50/50 rewards and the free downvotes appear to have reduced bidbot use and some other less ethical behaviors on the platform.
I've seen this myself firsthand just looking around and I've seen quite a few others reporting similar.
In fact I've seen a lot of really positive behavior from some of the bigger names.
Looks like one of the biggest critics of steem berniesanders mostly stopped his flag wars and is going back to manually curating and creating content.
And I saw numerous other big critics of steem showing respectful energy and welcoming him back and expressing similar positivity.
I then saw one of the big names buy what if I remember correctly was 250k of steem and another big name bought I think 70k.
Even though steem is around 15 cents, some of these big names are buying a lot. I doubt it's some kind of trick, I think they genuinely believe in steem longterm.
So, I guess to summarize... I was starting to lose some faith in steem and it seemed like things were getting worse and worse and...
Now all of a sudden it looks like maybe things will get better. I can't say for sure, though there is a lot positive happening and good energy going around.
A couple other things real quick... My father @irvinesimages also recently got a number of upvotes on his photography from a whale which was awesome.
And I heard back from the champion of the first season of the IFC after she got the trophy and hat I sent.
She basically told me that the contest was very meaningful to her and it really humbled me a lot.
That's worth more than money to me, and it wouldn't have happened without steem. This platform is so much more than just the money.
It may be harder for new people on the platform to get started and might continue to get more difficult in general...
Though I would still suggest giving it a try if you enjoy chatting with interesting people, blogging or sharing stuff on social media among other reasons.
I'd also suggest to try not to think of the money so much and just enjoy it..
There's a lot of inspiring and interesting things going on and if you get a bit deep into it you may even want to try to think of creating some kind of project or community yourself.
It's an awesome atmosphere at times and there's a ton to learn and check out.
It's almost like being a pioneer in a new land and there's a lot of lucrative potential for people who have good ideas or useful services.
Thanks for reading the article if you did, I'd appreciate hearing any feedback or questions if you have any and peace! Bye until next time. :D
PS I was reading around the other day and saw a comment from a supercritical guy who mentioned the 20 steem rule and a lot of the bad stuff and claimed the positive things I mentioned like the change in behavior of many users and big fish powering up a lot and bernie changing were like tricks basically, and... That he wasn't being fooled by such. I kinda really doubt that and I think there is genuine positive stuff happening and that steem will probably be around for many years, yet I can't prove it either way, I try to stay openminded... I guess time will tell.

Lol... It kinda seems like time flies either way. And it has been both fun and not fun over the last three years both on steem and in life in general, but... It is what it is. That's life I guess and I'm learning to accept it and love it more and more. :)

3 years is quite a milestone wow. I cant get over that your account was worth 50k at one point. I can believe it though because my modest account was once worth 3k a few years back. If we only knew what the future would bring. I know that money isnt everything but it would have been nice to realize some of the gains.Hindsight is 20/20 though. I was a bit skeptical about the hard fork at first but I have seen a lot of positive changes taking place and I am likely it personally. I think that Steem has more of a future now. Before all the short sighted behaviors of trying to suck as much steem from the reward pool as possible were basically destroying the platform. Now I think it has a future. Who knows maybe the steem price will rise and bring your account back up a little closer to where it once was??? Good luck on your continues journey! I'm glad you're sticking around.

Yeah... That was pretty exciting when my account was worth so much. If I could have seen into the future I would have tried to cash some out, though I thought the value was going to keep going up! Boy was I wrong, heh... And I kinda doubt it'll go that high again, but... Who knows, maybe it will? Maybe it'll go even higher someday? I don't know what's going to happen. One reason I doubt it is because there have been so many people leeching from the system in non-ethical ways, however that seems to be changing with some of the new updates and it seems like the scammer are often having a tougher time and genuine content is being curated and rewarded more. Guess we'll see what happens.
And yeah, I was skeptic too of the hardfork as my post complaining about it showed and I still think that 20 steem rule is bad as I mentioned in the OP, though... Some of the other stuff seems to really be helping! I'm rather surprised in a positive way just how much things have changed for the better.
Agreed with the rest of what you said as well and yeah I think the scammers were sort of destroying the platform and now it's moving in a much better direction! Thanks for the good luck and being glad that I'm sticking around. :D Same to you! Good luck to you as well on your journey and I'm glad you're still around as well. You're one of my favorite people on here and I gave you a couple of shout outs recently to a couple of bigger accounts that you may or may not have noticed, hopefully that helped to bring a lil more attention to your content and your blog. Peace man!

Happy birthday. So glad you are still here.
Here's to 3 more where chances are we will see regulations shut down most shit projects and the ones with actual use will not be hidden in the weeds.

Thanks practicalthought! I'm so glad you're still here as well. :) You're one of my favorite people to hear from on here!
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by regulations shutting down shit projects, but I do hope that the ones with actual use will not be hidden in the weeds! And it does seem like there's a lot more genuine curating going on and less scammy behavior so that's encouraging! :D
I guess time will tell, but it is looking more positive. ._.

With the regulations in the U.S. and elsewhere, many of the alt projects will wither badly. Will be curious to see what kind of hit many take just from Binance recently closing the doors to U.S. residents, and they will only be listing about 23-25 coins on the U.S. exchange. The U.S. plays a large role in the velocity of coins valuations, which in many ways has aided shit projects. As they fall to the side (as more exchanges seek to be compliant with the growing regulations) it should be healthier for the growth of good projects/tokens.

Congratulations on the three years @apolymask, for any of the new users reading the post, yes, when season 3 starts of IFC play, meet new and interesting people from all over the world, have a reason to post well about almost anything free of reprisal.
I also had doubts and still think there are things wrong with HF 21/20, but it is in the past, problems solved, problems encountered, there will always be a problem for someone or a problem to fix, we flow with the changes or we get swept away in a turbulent tide of discontent. Sometimes it is easier to go with the flow, or swim on the edge of the bore tide. It is always a struggle when swimming upstream, or struggling to grow an account on steem.
Once again congrats on the three years, I hope you find the next three years just as fun.

Thank you bashadow. :) Also, thanks for encouraging anyone who may be reading to give the IFC a chance next season!
I tend to agree with everything you said in the next paragarph and I think that was poetic how you worded it. One of the cool things about steem is that it's not set in stone and if something is wrong we should hopefully be able to come together as a community to address it and hopefully fix it as well.
Thanks again for the congrats and same to you! I hope you have fun into the future on this platform as well. :D

Congrats @apolymask. Three years wow! You have contributed something to the relationships here on steemit through the IFC project and i am grateful for it.
I have always had positive vibes for steem. There have been times when i got irritated but generally i have kept my hopes up. I feel that what is going on is actually genuine not a trick. I came for the money but i still for my writing and i know that if not for steemit, i would have dropped my pen a while back. So that is the value for me.
I do hope that better things are waiting ahead. All the best sire

Thank you warpedpoetic! And yeah.. It's been a while! Heh. I'm happy to hear you think I contributed something to the relationships here on steem through the IFC and that you're grateful for it! :)
I appreciate you sharing that and telling me.
That's cool you've always had positive vibes about steem! I agree and I also feel it is genuine in general, though I do think some shady stuff has happened and goes on and unfortunately it sometimes seems like that is human nature to a degree at least in regards to how our some of our current society and culture are and have been, especially when things of value are concerned!
That's awesome that steem has helped you keep writing! You're an epic writer in my opinion as well so it has been great to be exposed to your art and get to know you!
I also hope that better things are waiting in the future, thanks for the well wishes... And same to you! All the best to you as well. :)
PS... We're still judging the second season of the IFC and are about half way through, if you wanted to get any late entries in and have a chance at the 200 steem prize you still have time! I can't remember for sure, but I don't seem to remember you playing in any rounds this season? If you want to, you still can! Any round after round 10 should be fine. Peace man!

No i didn't get in on any rounds. I have some offline stuff going on and i have not been getting involved in any activities on discord even.
Thanks for the kind words. The steemit family, made of people like you, helped give me confidence in my writing and that's a great gift.

Ah. I see. Understood. I've been dealing with a lot of offline stuff as well.
You're welcome for the kind words and I'm glad to hear the steemit family including people like myself have helped to give you confidence in your writing. :)
You're a great writer and I'm not just saying that, you have a unique and powerful style and you helped me become a better writer as well just by reading your content! Credit where credit is due.
I tend to agree in regards to your last statement... Not sure if it will always be that way, but right now it is and I don't see it changing any time soon.
Much love and all the best to you my friend!

Happy Steemiversary! I'm also seeing a positive direction after the latest hardfork. Glad your dad is getting some big upvotes, his photos are amazing!
I also found the @ifc a great experience that really got me integrated into using Steem, and that has been life changing! Not because of income, because of the mindset shift. I know I haven't been around much for season 2, I've just hit my capacity for working and trying to keep my business afloat, so I don't write nearly as much as I'd like. Will be back, as I'm able.
Good to hear you're feeling hopeful!

Thanks wholeself-in! :) It's nice to hear from you.
That's encouraging to hear you have seen a similar positive direction after the recent Hardfork and thank you for the sentiments about my father's photography and for appreciating his artwork!
That's awesome you found the IFC to be a great experience which helped you integrate more into using steem! Also, that it has been life changing in a mindset shift sort of way. I feel like that too on my end and... That makes me happy. :D
Understood in regards to not being around as much for season 2, I've been super busy as well! I can't even keep up with my messages, but I do my best.
We are still judging the entries and are on round 8 I think? So if you wanted to get any late entries in from somewhere around round 10 or up you could, however I have a feeling I'm going to give you all 3 of my votes for the hero round where you drew that awesome picture and talked about the show you liked when you were younger, so I'm pretty certain you are guaranteed to make it into the finals already at this point in time as only 1 point is needed this season to make it into the finals.
You could possibly improve your rank and exp and such if you wanted to, but you're already in the finals and I will notify you when we start them!
Thanks for the nice message and I hope you are doing well! Bye until next time. :)
