This is defitely a worthwhile question for the martial arts inclined. The lineage of all martial arts are incredible interesting to me, and I may make a post on that eventually, but for now I just want to focus on the distinct difference between these two 'gentle arts'.
BJJ in fact refers to the sport jiu jitsu used in tournaments and more traditional competition scenariosl. Traditional jiu jitsu practitioners always prefer position over submission as dominance is attained step by step through passing guard and gaining mount. Brazilian jiu jitsu is quite refined and still incorporates striking and a perfect single and double leg entry for those wanting to learn self defense.
This brings me to Gracie Jiu Jitsu which actually has its own sections split by different brothers based on their fathers teachings. The two fathers Helio and Carlos both had many children, and Helio taught his children the more traditional based jiu jitsu whereas Carlos taught a more practical jiu jitsu focused towards real world self defense. Carlson Gracie epitomizes the work of his father as his modern day gyms focus on serious self defense and waste no time to gain position if a disarm of any sort is immediately available...hence the savage logo.
I myself have rolled on mats in Los Angeles owned by Carlson Gracie. The Firehouse on Venice Blvd is a particular gym that homes black belts and beginners alike, Rey Diogo is one of the greatest instructors of all time in my modest opinion. I have visited many UFC gyms across the Southbay yet not one really compared to the Carlson Gracie style I love. If you do want to become more in tune with a martial art, jiu jitsu has many options and many ways to transition in a physically intensive sport.

From what I know, BJJ is more about the sport/competition aspects, while GJJ is the self-defense/vale tudo style where it started from. If you're in LA I've heard Kron Gracie(Rickson's son) focuses on this type jiu-jitsu at his academy.

I remember learning about Gracie Jiu-Jitsu after watching a tape of Royce beating Ken Shamrock. It always interested me because I thought if I had to defend myself.....I wouldn’t need to strike to be affective and escape. I never took the iniciative to train. I wish I had. Not sure how my little 115 lb frame would do.....probably not good. Lol.
Gracies’ got skills.....they’re like spiders. : )

I DO have to point out for everybody that Ju-Jitsu is actually a traditional Japanese self-defense system developed for the samurai. Ju-Jitsu was supposed to be used if the samurai would lose his/her weapon and was fairly effective against armored opponents because of its focus on throws, locks, and strangulation. Ju-Jitsu is the forebear of Judo and some styles of Karate. The Brazillian school of Ju-Jitsu is the more popular one today and is focused on the "Ne-Waza" elements (grappling) of traditional Ju-Jitsu. Peace!
